asked a dumb question on a net last night and now im embarrassed

so i finally got my general license a few months back and ive been lurking on the local 2m repeater net pretty regularly just to get comfortable. last night i checked in for the first time and when the net control asked if anyone had any traffic or announcements i panicked and just said my call and said i had a question about... something. i dont even remember what i asked now, something about skip propagation i think, and it was totally off topic for what was supposed to be a ragchew net and i could just tell by the pause afterward that it wasnt the right place or time for it.

nobody said anything mean but i felt pretty awkward. is there like an unwritten rule about what you can and cant bring up during a net check-in? i genuinely had no idea there were different types of nets and that some of them have pretty specific purposes. would love to know how to read the room better before i just barge in with random stuff again

oh man dont sweat it, everyone does something like this when they first start checking into nets. i remember keying up on what i thought was a ragchew net and launching into a whole thing about my antenna project only to realize it was an emergency communications training net and the net control was very politely trying to move things along lol.

the general thing to know is that most nets have a format they follow and it usually gets announced at the top if you listen for it. a traffic net is pretty strict, you pass formal messages and thats basically it. a directed net has a specific topic or purpose. a ragchew net is more freeform but even those usually have the net control asking for checkins first before opening it up. the best thing you can do is just listen for a few sessions before you check in, and if youre unsure just check in, give your call, say youre just listening or new to the net and most net controls are totally happy with that. nobody expects new folks to have it all figured out right away

yeah honestly the net control probably didnt even think twice about it. those of us running nets have heard way more awkward moments than one slightly off-topic question, trust me. i ran a weekly traffic net for about three years and i can tell you the thing that actually bugs net controls is people who kerchunk the repeater mid-net without identifying, not someone who checked in and asked something random.

if you want to get a feel for net procedures there's actually a good document called the ARRL Net Directory or something like that, and there used to be a net etiquette guide floating around on their site. but honestly just listening is half the battle. after a few weeks youll have the rhythm down and it wont feel weird at all
