IC-7300 dropping into TX randomly, no key connected

so this has been driving me nuts for about three weeks now. my IC-7300 randomly keys up on its own, no key plugged in, no nothing. just sitting there monitoring and it'll flip into TX for like half a second to maybe 3-4 seconds. ALC goes nuts, power output shows maybe 5-10 watts of what i assume is just noise or something.

i checked the ACC port, nothing plugged in. key jack is empty. ci-v cable is unplugged. wifi is off. it doesn't seem to correlate with any specific band or mode, happens on SSB and FT8 both. did a full factory reset last week and it still does it.

the radio is about 2 years old, bought used from a guy who said it had no issues but who knows. i did notice before the reset that the touch screen was acting a little weird, like registering phantom presses near the bottom edge. wonder if that's related somehow? or totally separate problem. anyway if anyone's dealt with this id love to hear it because icom support basically told me to send it in and that's not really an option right now

the phantom touchscreen thing is almost certainly your culprit. those icom touch panels can develop issues where the digitizer starts misreading inputs, and if its registering a phantom press on the TX button or somewhere near the transmit controls, that would do exactly what you're describing. its a known enough issue that there's a few threads on eham and the icom reflector about it.

before you send it in you could try recalibrating the touch screen if there's an option buried in the menus, i don't have a 7300 in front of me right now but i believe there's a touch calibration somewhere under the setup screens. if the phantom presses are causing it the calibration might not fully fix it but it could at least tell you if that's the problem. long term the digitizer overlay is replaceable, not a super cheap fix but way less than depot repair. some guys have done it themselves but its fiddly work around the display ribbon cables.

had something weirdly similar on an older 746 pro, turned out to be a cracked solder joint on the mic connector board causing intermittent contact. probably different situation but just throwing it out there that connector issues can cause really bizzare keying behavior. the touchscreen explanation makes way more sense for your setup though
