RemoteHams setup frustrations - audio keeps dropping when using SDR side

so ive been trying to get my remote station sorted out for a few months now and im at the point where i almost have it working but the audio keeps crapping out whenever i switch over to the SDR portion of the setup. the rig control side works fine, i can key the transmitter, tune around, everything responds. but when i try to monitor through the SDR receiver that im running in parallel the audio just drops every minute or two and i have to refresh the whole session.

my setup is a IC-7300 at the remote end with a RTL-SDR dongle tapped off the antenna through a splitter, running SDR# on the remote machine and trying to pipe that audio back through RemoteHams. the internet connection at the remote site is a 25/5 cable connection which should be more than enough. im starting to wonder if this is a CPU issue on the remote machine because its a pretty old box, like a core 2 duo era thing i had laying around.

has anyone done something similar where youre running both the rig control AND a SDR feed simultaneously over RemoteHams? wondering if theres a smarter way to architect this or if im just asking too much of old hardware

yeah that core 2 duo is probably your problem honestly. SDR# is not super heavy but when you add RemoteHams doing its audio encoding on top of that plus whatever else is running in the background it adds up fast. i ran a similar setup on an old i3 machine for a while and it was borderline. upgraded to a used mini PC with a ryzen and all the dropouts went away.

also worth checking - what sample rate are you running the RTL at? if youre at 2.4 MSPS or higher and trying to push that through a remote session thats going to murder older hardware. drop it to 1.024 or even 900k if you dont need the bandwidth and see if that helps before you go buying new hardware.

not totally on point but have you looked at using something like OpenWebRX instead of trying to pipe SDR# through the RemoteHams session? i switched to that for the SDR part of my remote setup and its just a browser tab, way less overhead on the remote machine and you dont have to fight with audio routing at all. then you keep RemoteHams just for rig control and TX which is what its actually good at. two separate tools but it works really clean once you get it configured. the only annoyance is getting the port forwarding right if youre behind a NAT.
