RemoteHams SDR setup with internet linking -- am i overcomplicating this

so ive been messing around with setting up a remote station for probably 3 months now and i think i might be going down a rabbit hole that doesnt need to be this deep. currently have an IC-7300 at a friends property about 40 miles out, running RCForb server on a windows box out there with a pretty decent upload speed, somewhere around 25mbps last time i checked. that part works fine actually, latency is manageable for SSB, not great for CW but whatever.

the thing im trying to figure out now is whether it makes sense to also tie in RemoteHams on the same setup. i originally wanted to use RemoteHams because a buddy uses it and he can just hand me access when he wants, seemed cleaner for sharing. but now ive got this whole thing where im also thinking about running an SDR -- probably an RSPdx -- alongside the 7300 so i can see a wider chunk of spectrum for monitoring while i operate. and THEN someone in my club mentioned internet linking via Allstar which im not even sure is relevant to what im trying to do.

i guess my actual question is: has anyone run RemoteHams alongside a separate SDR panadapter feed at a remote site, and does the bandwidth get ugly? the upload at the remote site is the bottleneck im worried about. or am i just trying to do too many things at once here

yeah you might be overcomplicating it a little but not by much. the SDR feed is really the wildcard because depending on what sample rate you're streaming it at, it can eat bandwidth fast. like if you're trying to push a 2MHz wide IQ stream over the internet thats going to be rough even at 25mbps upload once you compress it. SpyServer helps a lot if you go that route, it only sends the chunk of spectrum you're actually looking at rather than the whole thing, so the bandwidth scales way down. i run an RSP1A at my remote site this way and typical usage is maybe 2-3mbps when im actively panning around, drops lower when im just sitting on one spot.

the RemoteHams thing and RCForb thing running simultaneously is a bit redundant but people do it. main thing is just making sure your remote PC isnt choking trying to run both server apps plus the SDR software at the same time. a halfway decent i5 box handles it fine in my experience. allstar is a totally different world though, thats VoIP linking for repeaters basically, i wouldnt worry about it unless you're specifically trying to tie into a node or something. probably not what you need here.

the bandwidth question really depends on how you configure the SDR side. ive done something similar, 7300 remote with an sdrplay next to it, and honestly the SDR stream was the first thing i throttled when things got congested. if your friend's upload is shared with anything else at that property during the day you'll notice it. evenings were always better for me.

one thing i'll say about RemoteHams specifically -- the client software is a little finicky sometimes, i had it just refuse to connect for like two days before i realized it was a port forwarding issue that had silently reset after a router firmware update. worth double checking that stuff if you havent already. not saying thats your problem just, it happens more than people expect with remote setups
