10m has been absolutely wild this week, anyone else noticing this?

so i was just messing around on 10 meters yesterday afternoon, not really expecting much, had it on in the background while i was doing some stuff around the shack. then all of a sudden im hearing stations from brazil, argentina, a couple from south africa i think. just pile after pile showing up out of nowhere. i havent seen 10m open like that in a while honestly. checked the solar flux index and it was sitting pretty high, like mid 180s i think. makes sense i guess but i feel like ive been checking for months and nothing was this good.

anyway i worked a few of them, nothing super exotic but it felt great after a long stretch of the band being kinda dead in my area. im in the midwest US if that matters. just wondering if others were seeing the same thing or if it was more of a localized thing. also curious if anyone has a good way to track when these openings are likely to happen ahead of time because i feel like i always miss the good ones or catch them by accident like this

yeah 10m has been really cooking lately, the solar cycle is finally delivering. SFI in that range definitely helps but honestly what i watch more is the k-index, if its sitting at 0 or 1 when the flux is high thats when you get those long haul openings that just go on for hours. when it spikes up to 3 or 4 even with decent flux the band can just die or get real patchy.

for tracking ahead of time i use the DX maps site and also just follow wwv propagation bulletins, they go out at 18 minutes past every hour on 10, 15, 20 mhz and give you the current flux and k-index. after a while you start to get a feel for what the numbers mean in terms of what bands to expect. but honestly a lot of it is still just being on the radio when it happens, which sounds like exactly what you were doing

omg yes i was on sunday morning and worked like 8 south american stations in maybe 20 minutes, i only have a dipole up so im not exactly running a big signal but they were all coming back to me first or second call. i was not expecting that at all. my boyfriend kept asking why i was so excited and i had a hard time explaining it lol. i didnt know about the solar flux thing being related, thats actually really cool. gonna look up that wwv bulletin thing the other person mentioned
