first SOTA activation today, went better than expected mostly

so i finally did my first summit today, W4V/SH-002 up in the valley. been talking about doing this for like two years and my buddy finally dragged me up there. i brought the KX2 and a random wire hung from a tree with a piece of paracord and a rock, nothing fancy at all. got up there and the wind was something else, had to hold the antenna down with a stick jammed between two rocks.

managed to log 14 contacts in about 25 minutes on 20m SSB before the clouds started looking ugly and we packed it up. didnt get enough for the activation to count i think? something about needing 4 contacts minimum. i had way more than that so i think im good but need to double check the rules again. anyway the whole thing was just a lot of fun and way less stressful than i thought. the KX2 running 10w punched way above its weight.

yeah 4 QSOs is the minimum, sounds like you nailed it. that random wire setup is honestly what most of us use, dont let anyone tell you you need some fancy linked dipole right out of the gate. the KX2 is a great radio for this stuff, ive had it freeze up on me in cold weather once but otherwise really solid. congrats on the first one, its kind of addictive from here

nice, which summit was that? ive been looking at some of the SH ones but havent done that area yet. also what length wire were you running, im still trying to figure out what to bring for my first POTA activation next month, probably just a state park not a summit but same idea basically
