using DXwatch and QRZ spotting together - am i doing this right?

so ive been playing around with cluster spotting for maybe the last month or two and im honestly a little confused about how people use all these different tools together. like i have QRZ pulled up on one tab, DXwatch on another, and sometimes i have DX summit open too and theyre all showing slightly different spots or the same spots at different times.

my question is basically - is there a "right" way to use these or do most people just pick one and stick with it? i tried connecting to a telnet cluster through my logging software (using Log4OM) but i couldnt get the port settings right and gave up after like 45 minutes of messing with it. the web-based stuff is easier but i feel like im missing spots or getting them late compared to what people on the dx cluster facebook group are talking about.

also the QRZ logbook integration is pretty slick for logging confirmed contacts but does anyone actually use the QRZ spotting network as their main cluster source? feels like DXwatch pulls from more aggregated sources but i genuinely dont know. been licensed about 8 months, general class, mostly HF on a wire antenna in a HOA situation so every rare DX i can work matters to me.

yeah this is pretty common confusion when you're starting out with cluster stuff. the short answer is theyre all pulling from mostly the same underlying network of cluster nodes, just with different filtering and refresh rates. DXwatch and DX Summit both aggregate from the AR cluster network so youll see a lot of overlap. QRZ's spot network is a bit more curated i think, or at least it feels that way.

for the telnet thing - if you're using Log4OM try dxc.ve7cc.net on port 23, that node is usually pretty reliable and the VE7CC software does some nice filtering so you're not getting flooded with spots on bands you dont care about. once you get that working inside your logger its honestly a game changer because the spots just pop up on your bandmap automatically and you can just tune to them.

the web tools are fine for casual operating but yeah you are probably seeing spots 1-3 minutes late depending on how often the page refreshes. when somethings rare and the pileup fills up in 90 seconds that actually matters. stick with it though, once you get the telnet connection going you wont go back to the browser tabs.

im kind of in the same boat as you honestly, been licensed a little longer but still figuring out the cluster thing. one app that helped me a lot was the HamAlert service - you set up triggers for specific callsigns or DXCC entities and it pushes a notification to your phone when something gets spotted. so instead of staring at DXwatch waiting for that one country you need, it just texts you basically. changed how i operate for sure.

also for what its worth i just use DXwatch as my main browser tool and stopped trying to have three tabs open, it was making me crazy
