finally built my first regen receiver - some questions about regeneration control

so i've been slowly working through Experimental Methods in RF Design and decided to just bite the bullet and build one of the simple regen designs as a first project. got it mostly working on 40m but im having trouble getting smooth regeneration control. right now it either blasts into oscillation or barely does anything - there's like almost no middle ground where it's sitting just below the threshold doing the sensitivity thing it's supposed to do.

im using a j310 jfet and controlling regen with a 100k pot on the drain supply voltage. the coil is a random air wound thing i made from some leftover magnet wire on a pvc form, probably 40 turns or so. i can hear signals fine when its not oscillating but i cant get that sweet spot where youre right at the edge. seen some guys online say they use a separate tickler winding but the design i copied doesnt have one, its just feedback through the tank capacitor arrangement.

is this a component value issue or am i missing something fundamental about how these work? also my antenna is just a random wire out the window which might be part of the problem, loading the tank too much maybe?

yeah the antenna loading thing is almost certainly part of it. regens are super sensitive to antenna impedance and if youre coupling directly to the tank it'll drag down the Q and mess with your regeneration threshold. a lot of builders add a small buffer stage or at least a resistive pad between the antenna and the tank - even just loosely coupling through a small value cap instead of direct connection makes a huge difference. try backing way off on the antenna coupling first and see if the control smooths out.

the other thing with pot-controlled drain voltage is the taper matters a lot. audio taper pots actually work better for regen control than linear ones even though it seems backwards, because the sensitivity curve of the circuit kind of matches the log taper. might be worth trying if you have one laying around. also 100k might be a bit high depending on the jfet - what's your drain voltage swinging between at the extremes of the pot?

i had almost the exact same problem with my first one, took me forever to figure out the antenna was killing it. ended up winding a separate link coil, like 3 or 4 turns over the main coil and connecting the antenna to that instead. total game changer honestly, the regen got way more controllable after that. not sure why some of those simple designs skip the link winding but it really does matter in practice even if the theory says you can skip it.
