what's going on with 10m lately? feels like it's been waking up

so i've been noticing 10 meters has been doing some weird and honestly pretty exciting things the past few weeks. caught a few europeans coming in yesterday afternoon around 1400 local and i almost fell out of my chair because i wasnt even really paying attention, just had the rig scanning and suddenly there was a DL station booming in like he was across town.

checked the solar flux index and it was sitting around 180 which i guess is decent? i'm still kind of learning how to read the numbers and translate them to actual expectations on the bands. like i know higher SFI = better conditions generally but how high does it need to be before 10m really opens up consistently for transatlantic stuff. i've been using DXmaps and pskreporter to try and get a feel for where signals are coming from but honestly i'm not sure i fully understand what i'm looking at half the time.

also noticed the K index was low which i think means geomagnetic conditions were calm, is that the main other thing to watch? feels like i'm missing pieces of the puzzle here

yeah 10m has been really something this cycle, we're climbing toward the solar max for cycle 25 and honestly it's exceeded what a lot of people predicted a few years back. that 180 SFI you mentioned is solid, in my experience once you're consistently above 150 or so 10m can open to europe pretty reliably during the day, especially late morning into early afternoon your time depending on where you are.

the K index thing you mentioned is exactly right - low K (ideally 0 or 1) means the geomagnetic field is quiet and signals can propagate the way they're supposed to. when K spikes up to 4 or 5, especially after a CME hits, you'll notice the higher bands just kind of die and sometimes even 20m gets sketchy. there's also the A index which is kind of the 24-hour average version of K, worth keeping an eye on both. sites like spaceweather.com and the DX cluster are where i spend way too much time honestly. don't overthink it too much though, sometimes the best thing is just to get on and listen around, the bands will surprise you

oh man i had almost the exact same experience last thursday, was just messing around on 10m with low expectations and worked a CT1 station with my little vertical and 100 watts. the guy gave me a 59 and i was genuinely shocked. i'm still pretty new to HF and i keep reading about DX openings but it's different when it actually happens to you lol

i've been using the DX heat map thingy someone mentioned in another thread here and it helps me see when the band is actually open before i even key up. still figuring out the solar numbers but i figure i'll learn as i go
