anyone else do the Wednesday night traffic net? thinking about checking in for the first time

so ive been licensed about 8 months now (general class) and i keep hearing about the local Wednesday net on 147.195 but i always talk myself out of checking in because honestly i dont really know what to expect. like do they actually hand out traffic or is it more of a roundtable kind of thing? the net control guy sounds super serious when he announces it on the repeater and i dont want to mess up the flow or say the wrong thing.

also there's apparently some kind of special event station running this weekend for a lighthouse somewhere nearby - W4L something - and i saw it mentioned on the club facebook page but no details on how to work them or if you need to be a member. anyone know anything about that? im just trying to get more air time and stop being nervous every time i key up

oh man just check in, seriously. i was terrified my first time too and fumbled my callsign like three times before net control just calmly said "go ahead" and walked me through it. most traffic nets around here are pretty light on actual formal traffic these days, it ends up being more of a check-in and see who's around kind of thing. just listen for a full cycle first so you get the rhythm, then when net control asks for check-ins just give your call once, clearly, and wait. that's really all there is to it.

and yeah the lighthouse event - those are usually open to everyone, you dont need to be a member or anything. they typically set up portable and run a few bands. just call them when you hear them, exchange signal reports and your grid square or state and you're done. sometimes they give out a certificate if you log it on their website after. good excuse to get on HF if you havent been doing much of that

the wednesday net on.195 is fine, ive checked in maybe a dozen times. net control there is Bill and yeah he sounds intense on the air but he's actually a pretty nice guy at the club meetings lol. just don't double with someone else and you'll be totally fine. honestly the hardest part is just waiting your turn and not forgetting your call when it gets quiet
