when do you actually use phonetics vs just saying the letter normally

ok so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i still get confused about when im supposed to use phonetics vs just saying the letter. like on a repeater when someone asks for my call sign do i spell out the whole thing with nato phonetics every single time or is that overkill? i was on a local net last week and i said my call just normally and someone came back to me and asked me to repeat it with phonetics and i felt kinda dumb. but then ive also heard guys on the repeater just rattle off their call super fast without any phonetics and nobody says anything. is there like an actual rule or is it just a feel thing depending on conditions

honestly its mostly a feel thing but there are some situations where phonetics are just expected. nets usually want them, especially if the net control is logging everyone. on a clear repeater with good audio yeah most guys just say their call and move on, nobody cares. but if the band is noisy or you're making first contact with someone its always better to go ahead and spell it out. the NATO alphabet exists because certain letters sound almost identical over radio - B and P and D and E can all blur together depending on the audio. so like if your call has any of those in it, phonetics save a lot of back and forth. dont stress about the one time someone asked you to repeat, they probably just couldnt catch it the first time. you'll develop a feel for it pretty quick.

yeah what he said. i'll add that on HF it's basically expected almost all the time, conditions are rarely perfect and even a strong signal can have weirdness. i remember working a station on 40m and the guy had a V and a B back to back in his suffix and we went back and forth like three times before i finally caught it. phonetics wouldve solved that immediately. on a local repeater with good audio its more relaxed but if theres any doubt just use them. nobody ever got mad at someone for being clear.
