finally decided to go for the extra, not sure where to even start with the theory stuff

so i passed my general about 8 months ago and ive been on HF pretty regularly since then, mostly 40m and 20m SSB. figured its time to just bite the bullet and go for the extra class. the privileges on 160m and some of the HF bands are honestly what pushed me over the edge, plus i just want to actually understand whats going on when i'm using the radio instead of just turning knobs.

my problem is i look at the extra question pool and some of this stuff is way over my head. like the filter design questions, the impedance matching stuff, the amplifier theory... i did okay with general but this feels like a different animal. i took electronics in high school like 15 years ago so i have a vague memory of ohms law and not much else. does anyone have a recommendation for how to approach studying for this? i dont know if i should just memorize the question pool or actually try to learn the theory behind it, which seems like itd take forever

also curious if the extra privileges are actually worth it in day to day operating or if its one of those things that sounds better than it actually is

honestly the extra exam gets a bad reputation for being harder than it is. yeah the theory questions are tougher but if you actually sit down with something like the ARRL Extra Class License Manual or even just Gordon West's book, a lot of it clicks faster than you'd expect. the math isnt as bad as it looks because most of the actual calculations they ask are pretty formulaic, like you're not deriving anything from scratch, just plugging in numbers.

i'd say do both - learn the theory AND use the question pool. the theory helps the memorization stick, if that makes sense. i spent about 6 weeks studying maybe 45 mins a night and passed with room to spare. the filter stuff and the Smith chart questions tripped me up at first but once i watched a couple youtube videos on how LC filters actually work it made the questions feel way more approachable.

as for whether the privileges are worth it - depends what you want to do. the extra portions of 40, 20, 15 meters are noticeably less crowded during contests, which i love. and yeah 60m secondary allocation stuff, some of the 80m CW segments, it adds up. plus honestly just knowing you have the full ticket feels good.

i just went through this like 3 months ago so its pretty fresh. what got me was the digital signal processing questions and anything involving transistor biasing, that stuff had me staring at the page going what even is this. but the question pool isnt THAT big and if you use hamexam.org or qrz practice tests every day you start seeing the same questions over and over pretty quick.

the privileges thing - i mean i got excited about the 60m channels but honestly havent used them yet lol. the real thing for me was just wanting to actually know what im doing when i read about something technical in a forum post instead of just nodding along
