kind of embarrassed to ask but what do you actually say when joining a net

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i still get nervous every time i try to check in to a net. like i know the basic idea, you wait for net control to ask for check-ins and then you give your callsign, but i always freeze up a little and then worry im doing it wrong or stepping on someone.

last week i checked into the local tuesday night 2m net and the net control guy asked me something after i checked in and i panicked and just said my callsign again which felt really dumb. i think he asked if i had traffic or announcements? i genuinely had no idea what to say so i just said no and it seemed okay but i felt like everyone could tell i had no clue what i was doing.

also is there like an unwritten rule about how long you should wait after the last station finishes before you transmit? i keep either jumping in too fast or waiting so long that someone else goes and then i miss my chance. any tips from people who've actually been doing this a while would be really appreciated

oh man i remember feeling exactly the same way when i first started checking in to nets. honestly the net control guy probably didnt even think twice about it, they hear all kinds of stuff especially from newer folks and most of them are really patient about it.

to answer your question about traffic - that just means do you have any formal written messages to pass, like a radiogram or NTS traffic. 99% of the time on a casual local net the answer is just no and thats perfectly fine. announcements is pretty self explanatory, like if you wanted to mention an upcoming hamfest or something.

for timing, i usually just listen for the tail of the previous transmission to drop and then wait just a beat - like a second or so - before keying up. on FM you can hear the squelch open and close which helps a lot. the main thing is just dont key over someone who's still talking and you're mostly golden. after a while it becomes second nature honestly, just keep checking in every week even if it feels awkward. that's the only way it gets comfortable.

yeah what he said. also dont worry too much about being perfect, i've been doing this for like three years and i STILL occasionally kerchunk the repeater by accident when im trying to time my check-in lol. net controls on local nets are usually pretty laid back unless its a formal traffic net or an emcomm drill, in which case they'll usually explain the procedure at the top of the session anyway.

one thing that helped me was just listening to the net a few times before actually checking in so you get a feel for the rhythm of how that particular net runs. they can all be a little different in terms of how formal they are.
