confused about what i can and cant do on HF with a general license

okay so ive had my general for about 8 months now and i thought i understood what bands i have access to but now im second guessing myself. my buddy told me i can operate on 40m but only certain portions of it and i looked up part 97 and honestly the table just made my head spin. like i get that technicians are basically stuck on VHF/UHF mostly but where does general end and extra begin on the lower bands? is there an easy way to think about this or do i just need to memorize the chart. also separate question but does it matter which mode i use in certain segments or is that only for like phone vs cw stuff. sorry if this is a dumb question ive just been nervous to transmit on HF because i dont want to accidentally be somewhere im not supposed to be

not a dumb question at all, this trips up a lot of new generals. the short version is that the band is split into segments based on license class, and yeah mode matters too - you cant just go anywhere on 40m with ssb for example. generals get phone privileges starting at 7.175 MHz on 40m, everything below that down to 7.025 is cw/data territory for generals, and extras get a chunk below that too. the ARRL has a band plan chart thats way easier to read than the actual part 97 table, honestly just print that thing out and tape it next to your radio until it clicks. the main thing to remember is if youre on phone, stay above the phone segment floor for your license class and youre fine. the FCC isnt sitting there monitoring every frequency but other hams absolutely will say something if you're out of band, trust me on that one.

yeah what he said. i was in the same boat when i upgraded. one thing that helped me was actually just tuning around and listening for a while before i ever transmitted - you kinda get a feel for where the phone guys are hanging out vs where the cw ops are and it starts to make sense. 40m in particular is busy so youll figure out the geography of it pretty quick just by listening.
