confused about how DXCC credits actually work - do I need a QSL card for every single one?

okay so ive been licensed about two years now and ive been casually logging contacts but lately ive been looking at the DXCC program more seriously and im honestly kind of overwhelmed by how it all works. like i understand the basic concept, you work 100 entities and you get the award, but the details are where i keep getting lost.

do you need a physical QSL card for every single entity or can you use LoTW confirmations? i've been uploading to LoTW since basically day one so i have a decent number of confirmations sitting there but i dont know if those count the same way. also wondering about WAS - is that a separate application process entirely? and WAZ, that one seems even more complicated because zones dont line up with countries in any obvious way i can figure out.

sorry if this is a dumb question, i just dont want to chase a bunch of contacts only to find out i was doing it wrong the whole time. currently sitting at maybe 60-something entities confirmed on LoTW so id love to know if im closer than i think to actually applying.

not a dumb question at all, this stuff genuinely confused me for a while too. so LoTW absolutely counts for DXCC - in fact the ARRL really prefers it now because it makes the whole process way smoother. when you apply through their website it basically just pulls your confirmed entities right from your LoTW account. you do NOT need paper cards if both you and the other station uploaded to LoTW and the contact matched up. paper cards are still accepted but honestly most active DXers are on LoTW these days so you might be in better shape than you think.

WAS and DXCC are completely separate applications yeah. WAS is 50 states confirmed, also works through LoTW. WAZ is a CQ Magazine award not ARRL so that one goes through a different process - you need 40 CQ zones and the confirmations can be cards or LoTW but you submit through CQ's system. the zones thing takes a little getting used to but once you look at a zone map a few times it starts to click. at 60+ entities you're not far from the basic DXCC at all, worth logging in to LoTW and actually checking your entity count on the award tracking page.

yeah what he said about LoTW is right. i was in the same boat like a year ago and just went ahead and applied not totally sure what i was doing and it worked out fine lol. one thing i'll add - when you do apply for DXCC there's like a small fee involved, and if you want the actual certificate mailed to you that's part of it. not a huge deal but worth knowing so you're not surprised. also some of those entities are super hard to get confirmed even if you make the contact because the operators from rare places dont always upload to LoTW right away or ever. so keep your paper cards when you get them just in case.
