is the Amateur Extra really worth it or am i overthinking this

so ive been licensed for about two years now, got my General back in and ive been pretty happy with it honestly. i can work HF, ive made some decent DX contacts, joined a local club, all that stuff. but people keep telling me i should go for the Extra and im not sure if its actually worth the effort or if im just going to spend three months studying stuff i'll never use in real life.

the theory questions on the Extra exam look pretty intimidating to me, like the stuff about filters and transmission lines and all the math involved. i passed the General without too much trouble but that felt like a different animal. does the Extra actually make you a better operator or is it mostly just the extra HF privileges and the vanity call thing? genuinely not sure what im missing out on by staying at General.

honestly the Extra privileges open up the lower portions of the bands that General cant touch and during a big pileup or contest that actually matters more than you'd think. like on 20 meters the Extra-only segment at the bottom is way less crowded and you can actually find a clear frequency sometimes when the rest of the band sounds like a wall of noise.

the theory stuff on the exam is tough, no question about it. i spent probably four months going through the question pool, mainly using HamStudy and a couple of ARRL books. the math isnt as bad as it looks once you start seeing the patterns, a lot of it is just memorizing which formula goes where. i wouldn't say studying for Extra made me dramatically better at operating but i did come away understanding my radio and antenna system a lot better than before, which i think has been genuinely useful. the vanity call is just a nice bonus if you care about that sort of thing, which some people do and some dont.

i just passed mine like six weeks ago so this is pretty fresh for me. the exam was harder than i expected even after studying a lot. some of the questions about things like image rejection and reactance formulas tripped me up but i still passed with enough margin so it wasnt a disaster. tbh what pushed me over the edge was wanting to operate on 75 meters without having to stay in the General segment, my local morning net runs down in the Extra portion and i kept missing chunks of it. so that was my main reason and it was totally worth it for that alone.
