finally cracked a decent pileup last weekend, some thoughts

so ive been chasing 3Y0 and some other rare ones for a while now and last weekend i actually managed to break through a pretty nasty pileup on 17m to work FT5ZM... well not that one obviously that was years ago, but you know what i mean, similar situation, big pileup, working split, and i finally feel like i figured some stuff out after years of just throwing my call in and hoping.

biggest thing that changed for me was actually listening before transmitting. sounds obvious but i was guilty of just jumping in immediately. spent like 10-15 minutes watching where the DX was actually picking up calls from in the split range, and they had a pretty clear pattern - kept coming back to the upper end of the split. so i parked there and on maybe my 4th or 5th call i got through. running about 500w into a 3el yagi so not exactly a pistol station but not a big gun either.

also started doing partial calls - sending just the last two letters of my suffix a couple times before sending the full call, especially when i heard the DX come back with just a partial. seems to help cut through when the band is just a wall of noise. anybody else have techniques that actually work consistently? and does anyone know if timing matters, like are there windows in a pileup where it gets thinner?

yeah the listening thing is huge and most people skip it completely. i operated from a pretty rare entity a few years back and from the DX side it was honestly chaotic - the number of stations calling before we even finished the QSO was ridiculous. the guys who got through consistently were almost always the ones listening to our pattern and not just blasting away on random freqs in the split.

timing wise, yes absolutely there are thinner windows. right after a big station works someone theres usually a brief moment where a bunch of people think the freq is 'theirs' and hesitate before calling again. that half second gap is real and if you time your call to start right as the pileup drops you can sometimes stand out. also early morning greyline on the lower bands, the pileup doesnt usually build until word spreads, so working them in the first hour or two of propagation opening is way easier than mid-pile.

the partial call thing works but only if you're actually responding to a partial - dont just send partials randomly because it muddies things for the operator and theyll just move on.

honestly my biggest improvement came from just getting a better antenna pointed the right direction, not gonna lie. was running a dipole for years and wondering why i couldnt bust pileups and then put up even a modest 2el wire yagi and suddenly things got way easier. theres only so much technique can do if youre 10dB down from everyone else in the pile.

that said the split listening trick is real, i do the same thing now. also noticed that some operators have a very obvious rhythm where they go up the band a bit every few QSOs, so if you can track that youre basically predicting where theyre going to listen next which is kinda cheating but its all fair game i think
