finally caught a 10m opening yesterday, what is going on with conditions lately

so i've been watching the solar flux index pretty closely for the past few months and i feel like conditions have been all over the place. yesterday afternoon i jumped on 10m just kind of randomly and worked 4 stations in south america and one in spain without even trying that hard, S7-S9 signals just sitting there. then this morning i checked and the SFI had dropped like 15 points overnight and 10m is dead as a doornail again.

is this normal for where we are in the solar cycle? i thought we were supposed to be climbing toward solar max but it feels so inconsistent. like some days the flux is up near 180 and the higher bands are alive and then it just tanks for a week. my buddy who's been licensed for 30 years says to just watch the K-index and not stress about it but i dunno, i feel like im missing openings because i dont know when to look.

also curious if anyone has a favorite resource for checking realtime band conditions besides the usual DXmaps and pskreporter. always looking for how other folks track this stuff.

yeah 10m has been doing exactly that, it's kind of the nature of the beast honestly. the solar flux is a lagging indicator in some ways and the actual propagation on any given day depends on so much more than just the SFI - geomagnetic activity, time of day, season, even which direction you're pointing. your buddy is right that a low K-index matters a lot, i'd say that's almost more important than a high flux number. a flux of 150 with a K of 4 is going to be worse than a flux of 130 with a K of 0 most of the time.

for resources i really like the DX cluster combined with just listening. cluster spots will tell you fast if a band is open somewhere. also N0NBH has a little propagation widget that a lot of people put on their sites, shows SFI, A-index, K-index all in one place and updates pretty regularly. honestly though the best way is to just have a radio on in the background and check 28.400 or wherever the SSB activity is every time you walk past the shack. you'll start to get a feel for it after a while.

omg i had the same experience last tuesday, worked like 6 EU stations on 10m SSB which never happens for me and then the next day nothing. i'm pretty new to HF so i don't totally understand all the solar numbers yet but i downloaded the Ham Radio Propagation app on my phone and it seems pretty useful for a quick check. the openings really do feel random though lol
