SSB audio always sounds like i'm talking through a tin can - what am i doing wrong

so ive been on SSB for about 8 months now and honestly my signal reports have been all over the place. most guys tell me im readable but a few have mentioned the audio sounds a bit boxy or muffled. im running an IC-7300 into a Heil PR-40 which should be a pretty solid combo from what everyone says, but something isnt clicking.

i went through the basic menu settings and i think the TX bandwidth is set somewhere around 2.4kHz which i read is pretty standard for SSB but honestly i dont know if thats ideal or if i should narrow it or widen it depending on conditions. also not sure if the mic gain is set right - its at like 60 on the icom scale and the ALC is bouncing around which i know isnt great.

do most of you mess with the parametric EQ settings in the 7300? i havent touched those because i figured the defaults were probably fine but maybe thats where im losing it. and should the compression be on or off for general ragchewing? i see guys go back and forth on this. any thoughts appreciated, getting a bit frustrated with it honestly

ALC bouncing is almost always the issue, yeah. on the 7300 the mic gain should be set so the ALC just barely kisses the bottom of the range on voice peaks - not slamming into it constantly. if its dancing around a lot you're overdriving the front end and that'll make you sound distorted and boxy. back the mic gain down, probably closer to 40-50 range, and then monitor the ALC again. the PR-40 is a pretty hot mic too so it doesnt take much.

as for the parametric EQ - absolutely mess with it. the defaults on the icom arent bad but they're kind of flat for voice. i run a small boost around 2kHz and roll off a bit below 200Hz, cuts out the low-end room rumble and makes you sound clearer on the other end. speech processor i leave at like 4-5 for rag chewing, nothing crazy. you can always ask someone to give you an honest audio report while you tweak in real time, most elmers on 40m are happy to help with that kind of thing.

honestly the TX bandwidth thing is worth looking at too. 2.4 is fine but ive had good results bumping to 2.8 on clearer bands, just sounds fuller. though on a crowded 40m night you'll get complaints from people on adjacent freqs so narrow it back down then. kind of situational.

one thing nobody mentioned to me when i started SSB - mic placement matters way more than people think. PR-40 is a side-address mic so if you're talking into the end of it you're off-axis and that will absolutely make you sound muffled no matter what the EQ is doing. took me embarassingly long to figure that out with my own setup lol
