first WWFF activation coming up, not sure what to expect

so ive been doing POTA for about a year now and someone at the club meeting mentioned WWFF and i went down a rabbit hole last night reading about it. looks like there's a nature reserve about 20 minutes from my house that has a WWFF reference (KFF something, i forget the number) and im thinking about heading out there next weekend with my KX2 and a wire antenna.

my question is basically - is it much different from POTA operationally? like do i need to upload logs somewhere different, and is there a spotting network i should be using? i signed up on the wwff.cc site but honestly its a little confusing to navigate compared to the POTA site. also do hunters care about WWFF contacts the same way they do for POTA or is the community smaller? genuinely not sure what im walking into here

welcome to the rabbit hole haha. yeah WWFF and POTA overlap a lot but theyre separate programs with separate logs. you upload to wwff.cc and they have their own awards structure. the spotting is a bit scattered, some people use the POTA spotter out of habit but theres also the wwff logger and various regional clusters that pick up wwff spots. honestly just self-spot on wwff.cc and you should be fine.

the community is definitely smaller than POTA, at least here in the states, but internationally its actually pretty active - europe especially. if you get on 17m or 20m during decent conditions you might be surprised how many EU stations come back to you looking for the reference. i activated a KFF reference last spring and had a pileup of german and polish stations for like 20 minutes which was not what i expected at all. just make sure you log the wwff reference in your comments field or whatever logging software you use so it comes through on the upload correctly.

the KX2 is gonna be perfect for that, dont stress about the setup too much. i did my first wwff with basically the same kit and it worked fine. one thing i didnt realize until after - you need at least 44 QSOs to get the reference fully activated i think? or maybe its 44 for a certain award level, i might be misremembering, worth double checking on the site before you go out so you know what youre aiming for
