vertical vs dipole for 40m - am i overthinking this

so ive been going back and forth on this for probably two months now and i need someone to just tell me what to do. i have a pretty small lot, maybe 60x120 feet, and i want to get on 40m more consistently. right now im running a random wire out the window that works okay but i know im leaving a lot on the table.

the options i keep going back to are either a simple half wave dipole hung in an inverted V off my chimney (maybe 30 feet up at the apex) or one of those vertical designs with a ground radial system. the vertical is appealing because it fits the lot easier but ive heard the radial system is a whole project on its own. the dipole seems more straightforward but im not sure 30 feet is high enough on 40 to really do anything useful at low angles for dx.

i mostly do casual ragchewing, not really contesting, some dx when i hear something interesting. whats actually going to work better here, or is this just one of those situations where either one is fine and i should stop reading about it and just build something

honestly for ragchewing and casual dx a dipole at 30 feet inverted V is going to be totally fine. yeah it's not going to be a low angle dx machine but 40m is weird enough at night that you'll work plenty of stuff anyway. the radiation pattern from an inverted V at that height is more high angle which is actually great for domestic contacts and regional stuff. i ran one for three years before i had room for anything else and never felt like i was really missing out.

the vertical with radials IS a project. people underestimate how many radials you actually need to make it work decently. you want at least 16 if not 32 buried radials for a ground mounted vertical to start performing well, and that's a weekend of work minimum. if you dont have a weekend to dedicate to it before you even get on the air, do the dipole first. you can always add the vertical later once you know the band better and know what you actually want out of it.

im in basically the same situation, similar lot size, and i went with the inverted V last spring. cut it for 40, fed it with 450 ohm ladder line into a tuner and now it loads up on 80 and 20 too which is nice. the chimney mount was a bit sketchy to set up alone but once its up its up. i get good reports on 40 most nights, worked into europe a few times late night when the band was open.

i think you're overthinking it, just build the dipole and get on the air. the best antenna is the one that actually exists
