first SOTA activation went way better than expected, some questions tho

so i finally did my first activation last weekend, took the FT-818 and a linked dipole up to a local W4 summit and managed to get 4 contacts on 40m SSB before the weather turned. got my first summit in the log which felt pretty great honestly. i was up there maybe 45 minutes total including setup.

couple things i wasnt sure about though - when i submit the activation to the SOTA database do i need to put the exact grid square or is the summit reference enough? i looked at the sotadata.org.uk site and it seemed like the summit ref (like W4T/SU-001 or whatever format) was the main thing but i wasnt 100% sure. also one of the chasers gave me a 57 and said something about adding me to their log but i didnt catch their callsign properly, is there a way to check if they submitted it or do i just have to live with potentially missing that one

anyway i definitely want to do more of these, already looking at a couple summits about an hour from me that i havent seen many activations for

congrats on the first one, that feeling of getting those 4 contacts in the log from a summit is pretty addictive honestly. you'll be planning the next one before the week is out.

for the log submission, yeah the summit reference is the key thing, you don't need to put a specific grid square separately, the database already knows the coordinates from the summit ref. just make sure you've got the right reference - sometimes there are summits with similar names or numbers especially if you're in a big association. double check it against the SOTA Mapping Project or the official summits list before you submit.

as for the missed callsign, check the reverse beacon network if you were running CW (probably not on SSB) or honestly just post your log as best you can and if that chaser was paying attention they'll have your callsign in their log anyway. chasers are usually pretty on the ball about that stuff. if they submitted their chaser log it'll show up on your activator page on sotl.as - that site shows you everything nicely cross-referenced. worth bookmarking it.

oh man i remember submitting my first activation log and being completely confused by the interface for like 20 minutes lol. i accidentally submitted the wrong date and had to email the association manager to fix it. just double check everything before you hit submit is all im saying

also 40m was a solid choice for a first go, some people try to do VHF FM only and struggle to get the 4 contacts depending on where they are. good call
