ok so i decided i want to get my technician license and i downloaded the question pool from the arrl website but honestly its just kind of overwhelming. theres like 400+ questions in there and i dont really know if i should just memorize all of them or actually try to understand the material. a friend told me to just use ham study or some app and grind through it but another guy at my local club said thats a bad idea and youll forget everything right after the exam. i dunno who to listen to. also some of the math questions about ohms law and stuff, do those actually show up a lot on the real test or can i kind of skip those for now

honestly the memorize vs understand debate has been going on forever and both sides have a point but for tech i think you can get away with mostly memorizing and filling in the gaps with some basic understanding. the question pool is the actual pool they pull from so if you know all those questions youre going to pass, full stop. hamstudy.org is what most people use and it tracks which ones you keep getting wrong so you can focus there. the math stuff does show up, maybe 3 or 4 questions on actual ohms law and power calculations, its not that bad once you just remember the triangle trick. spend maybe two weeks on it consistently and you should be fine, the tech exam really isnt that hard compared to general

i just passed mine like two months ago so maybe i can help lol. i used the gordon west book which my dad had from years ago but the question pool was outdated so make sure whatever book you get matches the current pool, i think the current one runs through 2026 or something like that. i did hamstudy every day on my lunch break for about three weeks and that was enough. the ohms law questions werent as scary as i thought, just memorize volts equals amps times resistance and you can figure out most of them. good luck with it
