  1. New General here, working on improving my on-air communication skills. When you're communicating on the air, using the NATO Phonetic Alphabet, recognized by most Hams worldwide, can help avoid confusion that results because many letters sound alike. It's a good idea to become familiar with standard phonetics and use them when operating in SSB (single sideband) mode. Can someone break down the step-by-step process for when to use phonetics? Do I always phonetically spell my callsign, or only under certain conditions? Also, what's the proper procedure when the other station doesn't copy your call correctly?
  2. so i decided i want to get my technician license finally after like two years of telling myself i would do it. my buddy has his general and keeps bugging me to just get it done. i downloaded some app but honestly i dont know if im just memorizing answers or actually learning anything, feels kind of hollow you know? like there are questions about ohms law and antenna stuff that i sort of understand but then theres all this regulatory stuff about which frequencies you can use and what the power limits are and it just blurs together. is there a study guide that actually explains the why behind things or is it all just flash card grinding? also how long did it take you guys to feel ready to actually schedule the test
  3. so i just passed my technician exam last week and im trying to figure out what handheld to get. ive been reading threads for like two hours and i keep seeing the same names come up — baofeng, yaesu ft-65, kenwood th-d74 — but the price range is all over the place and i honestly dont know what matters and what doesnt for just getting started. my main thing right now is i just want to be able to hit the local repeaters and maybe do some simplex with a buddy who lives about 4 miles away. nothing crazy. but i also dont want to buy something cheap and regret it in six months when i actually know what im doing, you know? is the uv-5r really that bad or do people just hate it for the programming headache? i saw someone say the receive is terrible on it but then another person said theirs has been running for 5 years no problem. really confused on where to land here.
  4. ok so the good news is its more doable now than it used to be, the bad news is a single yagi at 25 feet on 2m EME is still going to be a real uphill fight even with JT65. the path loss is around 252 dB depending on moon distance and youre fighting that with everything you have. realistically most people doing single yagi EME are running something like a 17+ element long boom yagi with a full legal limit amplifier, and even then you're counting on the other station having a serious array. the preamp thing is exactly as critical as you've read. you want the LNA physically at the feedpoint, like literally mounted at the connector on the boom, because even half a meter of coax before it adds noise you cant get back. most people use a relay setup that switches the LNA in on receive and bypasses it on transmit. SSB Electronic and Kuhne both make good units but there are also some solid homebrewed designs from W6PQL that people have had good results with. the noise figure matters a lot, you want under 0.5 dB ideally. your 897 actually isnt terrible for this as a starting point, the IF is fine for feeding into WSJT-X, just make sure youre running it into a decent soundcard interface. the antenna is really where you need to invest first though. single yagi EME contacts happen but you need everything else dialed in perfectly and youre relying on big stations on the other end.
  5. honestly the theory on the extra is not as brutal as it looks at first. yeah theres impedance matching and filter stuff and some of the oscillator questions are a little weird but a lot of it you can get through by just really drilling the question pool. hamstudy.org is your friend, use it every day for like 6 weeks and you'll start seeing patterns. i wont pretend i fully understood every smith chart question when i passed but i got enough right that it didnt matter. that said if you want to actually understand what youre doing with antennas and feed lines later on its worth taking the time to really get the transmission line theory. i went back and read some of the ARRL handbook sections after i passed and it clicked a lot better once i had the context. the extra privileges on 20 are genuinely nice, the CW segments are quieter and even just having that extra slice of phone on 40 is useful when things are packed.
