  1. nice work getting out there. i did my third activation a few weeks ago and the P2P thing still kind of surprises me when it happens, like oh wait someone else is also sitting in a field somewhere doing the same thing haha. its a fun little moment. one thing i'd add about the qrp pileup stuff - i run 5 watts a lot and i found that picking a slightly less crowded part of the band helps more than anything else. like if 14.244 is a mess try up around 14.260 or somewhere quieter, you dont have as much QRM to compete with and your 5 watts goes further. also make sure your antenna situation is as good as it can be, a decent end fed is usually fine but height matters a lot more than people think
  2. so this started with just wanting to do the TX mod to open up the transmit range a little and somehow three weeks later im knee deep in a whole thing. did the standard jumper mod on the board which was straightforward enough, took maybe 20 minutes if you're careful with the ribbon cables. but then i got to reading about the ref oscillator and people swapping out the TCXO for something with better aging characteristics and now ive ordered parts and im not sure i actually know what im getting into the oscillator mod specifically — has anyone done this on a 7300 and actually measured before/after? im running WSPR and FT8 pretty regularly and the frequency stability matters more to me than it used to. the stock oscillator isnt terrible but i've seen it drift enough to be annoying especially in the first 20-30 minutes after power on. figured if im already inside the radio might as well do it while im in there also wondering about the fan mod, the stock fan profile is pretty aggressive and i know there's a resistor swap people do to make it less loud but i dont want to run the finals hotter than they should be. anyone know the thermals on that if you back off the fan speed a bit
  3. i started with a baofeng about two years ago and it was fine for getting started but i will say the menus drove me absolutely crazy at first and i had to program everything through CHIRP which took me a while to figure out. once i got it programmed it worked okay for the repeater but i eventually upgraded to a Yaesu FT-70DR and honestly it felt like going from a junky car to a real car lol. just clearer audio, easier to use, feels solid in the hand. if you think you're gonna stick with it i'd probably skip the baofeng step personally, but i know some people love them and swear by them so whatever works
  4. ok so i just got my technician a few months ago and upgraded to general last month, been making contacts on 40m mostly and a few on 20m when the band cooperates. everyone keeps telling me i need to get my QSLs sorted out but im honestly confused about the whole system. like theres LoTW which i guess is the ARRL thing, and then eQSL which seems like a different thing entirely, and then obviously paper cards which look really cool but seem like a lot of work. do i need all three? is one better than the other? i set up a LoTW account but the whole certificate thing was kind of a headache and im not sure i did it right because i uploaded a log and nothing happened that i could tell. also are paper cards even worth it anymore or is that kind of a dying thing? i got one in the mail from a guy in italy and it was genuinely cool to hold but i dont know if i should be sending them back to everyone or just the ones who send me one first. any advice appreciated, still figuring all this out
  5. so ive been licensed about 6 years and for most of that time whenever i ran into a big pileup i just kind of gave up after a few tries and moved on. figured my 100w and a wire antenna wasnt gonna cut it against the kilowatt stations with yagis. but last month there was a VP8 expedition on 17m and i really wanted it for a new one, so i actually sat down and paid attention to what was happening before i just started calling. what i noticed was the DX was working split, listening about 3-4 up, and most of the pileup was clustered right at the bottom of his listening range. so i went up maybe 5 or 6 khz above where everyone else was and just waited for a moment where things thinned out a little. got him on the third call. 100w into a end-fed halfwave. i was honestly kind of shocked. i think the thing i was doing wrong all those years was just calling on top of everyone else and expecting to get through by luck. listening first and finding the edges of where hes actually tuning seems so obvious now but i genuinely didnt think about it before. anyone else have specific techniques that work for them? especially curious if anyone has tips for 160 or 40 where the pileups get really nasty and the dx signal itself is sometimes barely there
