Helen Taylor's post in jumped into my first net last night and kind of froze up — tips? was marked as the answeryeah checking in with no traffic is totally normal, i do it almost every week on our Tuesday night net. half the people on there dont have anything to say they just want to be counted present basically. some nets even specifically ask for "short timers" at the end for people who just want a quick check-in and then drop off.
one thing that helped me early on was just listening to the net for a few sessions before checking in so you can hear how other people do it. every net has its own little culture and quirks and you kinda pick it up by listening. sounds like you already took the hardest step though honestly.

Helen Taylor's post in confused about what i can and cant do on HF with a general license was marked as the answerok so i passed my general exam like three weeks ago and ive been trying to figure out exactly what frequencies im allowed to use. i read through part 97 but honestly its kind of hard to parse, like i get the basic idea but then theres all these sub-bands and allocations and i keep second guessing myself before i transmit anywhere.
specifically im confused about the 40 meter band because i keep hearing technicians can use part of it too? and then theres the whole thing about phone vs CW privileges and where the lines are. i dont want to accidentally transmit somewhere im not supposed to. is there like a plain english version of this somewhere or do i just have to memorize the band plan chart

Helen Taylor's post in first ARES activation - didnt really know what to expect was marked as the answerthis is really encouraging to read, im still working on my technician and ive been thinking about ARES once i get licensed. do you need to have your general to participate or is tech enough to be useful? i dont want to show up and just be in the way

Helen Taylor's post in JS8Call vs FT8 for actual conversations — am i missing something was marked as the answersame boat here, the audio routing with virtual cables drove me nuts for weeks. ended up just getting a second cheap USB audio interface dedicated to JS8Call so i didnt have to keep switching things around. probably not the elegant solution but it works and i stopped losing my mind over VAC configurations.

Helen Taylor's post in finally pulled the trigger on an IC-7300 — few thoughts after a couple weeks was marked as the answerso ive been running an old FT-450D for about 4 years now and honestly it served me well but i kept hearing everyone talk about the 7300 and its waterfall display and i finally just bought one last month. figured id share some thoughts since i spent forever reading threads like this before i bought it.
first off the real-time spectrum scope is just as useful as people say, maybe more. i was skeptical because like how much do you really need to see the band visually when you can just spin the dial, but turns out it changes how you operate completely. i find myself just watching 40m for a few minutes and i can see exactly where activity is piling up before i even touch the tuning knob. found a pretty decent DX station last week just because i noticed a little cluster of signals forming around 7.155 or so.
the receiver itself feels noticeably cleaner to me than the 450D on crowded bands, though i know thats a pretty low bar. 20m last weekend during some contest i forget which one was just way more manageable with the roofing filter doing its thing. audio out of the built in speaker is actually decent enough that i havent bothered connecting my external speaker yet which surprises me.
only gripe so far is the menu system takes some getting used to. not terrible but not as intuitive as id like. also still figuring out the optimal settings for the NR and NB because i feel like ive been either running too much noise reduction and it sounds weird or not enough and the QRM is annoying. anyone have settings they landed on that work well for general HF use?
