  1. honestly i had the same hesitation but i went for it last year and i'd say the theory stuff is more useful than i expected, not because i sit there doing math while operating but because it changed how i think about antenna problems and why certain things work the way they do. like before i'd just throw something up and hope for the best, now i actually understand a bit of what's happening with feedline impedance and why my SWR does weird things in certain conditions. the exam itself isn't as bad as it looks if you spend a few weeks on HamStudy or similar — a lot of the questions you can actually work out logically even without memorizing them cold. the ones about phase angles and imaginary impedance components took me the longest. but the extra band segments on 80, 40, and 20 are legitimately nice to have especially when things get crowded during contests and you want to find a clear frequency. so yeah i'd say just do it, worst case you learn something and have to retake it once.
  2. yeah the arrl frequency/privileges chart is honestly the thing you want for this, way easier to read than part 97 itself. just search for arrl technician privileges chart and you should find a PDF. the one your club guy mentioned about 40m -- techs do get 40m but its CW only, 7.025 to 7.125 i think, so no phone down there. same deal with 80m and 15m, CW privileges only in limited segments. the real phone action for techs on HF is 28.300 to 28.500 on 10m. dont stress too much about accidentally keying up in the wrong place when youre just starting out, but yeah its good that youre thinking about it. most rigs will let you transmit anywhere so the responsibility is on you to know. once you upgrade to general a lot of this gets way simpler honestly
  3. so ive been on HF for about two years now and honestly for most of that time i just plugged in whatever mic came with the radio and called it a day. but lately ive been getting reports that my audio sounds kind of muddy or bassy and someone on 40m last week literally told me i sounded like i was talking into a bucket which, fair enough i guess. started going down the rabbit hole on this and now im more confused than when i started. some guys swear by the stock mic, others are talking about compressors and equalizers and speech processors and honestly i dont even know where to begin. my rig is an IC-7300 if that matters. running into a dipole, nothing fancy. is there a sensible starting point here or do i really need to spend a bunch of money to just sound decent on phone? and whats the deal with the bass rolloff thing i keep seeing mentioned — is that actually important for SSB or is that more of a broadcast audio concern
  4. im in pretty much the same boat as you actually, been licensed about a year and just started getting into the awards stuff. one thing i'll add is that for FT8 specifically a lot of people do upload to LoTW pretty regularly because the logging software makes it easy, so your confirmation rate might actually be decent once a few weeks go by i did buy some paper QSL cards when i first got licensed and i dont regret it, its fun to get one back in the mail even if it takes forever. but for chasing awards LoTW is really the main thing you want to focus on
  5. had the exact same issue when i was starting out, the signalink levels drove me crazy. what finally worked for me was setting the signalink TX knob pretty low, like around 9 oclock, and then adjusting from there while watching the ALC on the radio. you really dont want ALC movement at all with vara or any of the digital modes, it'll trash the signal. once i backed off the drive everything clicked into place and i started actually completing sessions the gateway thing is just trial and error honestly. some days a gateway thats 300 miles away works better than one in the next county. propagation is propagation
  6. did both mods on mine maybe 18 months ago, the extended rx and the mars/cap at the same time. honestly the hardest part was just not losing the tiny diodes when i moved them, tweezers and good lighting are your friends. the rx outside normal coverage is definitely degraded, like youre not going to be pulling in weak signals on 118 MHz airband or whatever with any reliability, but for strong local stuff it works fine. i mostly use it to poke around the 60m area and listen to some utility stuff and for that its perfectly adequate. the mars/cap tx mod is the one i actually use more, being able to transmit slightly outside the band edges has been handy a few times during nets that use those edge frequencies. just make sure you grab the right service manual for your specific version of the radio because there were a few hardware revisions and the diode locations moved around between them. W4RT used to have a good write-up on it.
  7. nice, ive been wanting to try WWFF too. did you have any trouble finding the reference number for your location before you went out? thats the part that confuses me, like how do you know if a place is already in the database vs you having to submit it as a new one
  8. so i've been obsessively checking pskreporter and DXmaps basically every morning before work this week because the SFI has been climbing and i figured something had to give eventually. yesterday afternoon around 3pm local time i noticed spots starting to pop up on 10m from Europe and just jumped on it without even really thinking about it ended up working like 14 stations in about 45 minutes, couple of them were Spain and Portugal which i dont usually hear at all from here in the midwest. signal reports were all over the place, some 59 some barely there, but it was definitely a real opening not just random scatter or whatever. the band was doing that thing where it sounds kind of hollow? like signals come and go every few seconds anyway my question is really about the solar flux index — im still kind of fuzzy on how to actually use it as a predictor. like i know higher is better generally but how high does it need to get before 10 and 12 meters are actually worth checking? i feel like ive seen it at 150+ and still heard nothing and then other times like yesterday it was only around 130 and the band lit up. is there something else i should be looking at alongside it
