What Extra class band privileges are actually worth the upgrade?
I keep hearing about the "exclusive Extra segments" on 80, 40, 20, and 15 meters. Are these frequency privileges really that valuable in practice? I'm trying to decide if the exam effort is worth it for a General who mainly works phone and some digital modes. Specific question: How much "extra room" do you actually get when the HF bands are crowded? Are the lower band segments really better for DX and contesting?

finally did the TX mod on my 7300 and some thoughts
so ive had my IC-7300 for about two years now and kept reading about the extended TX mod and finally just did it last weekend. its pretty straightforward, just a couple solder points on the main board if you know what youre looking for, nothing crazy. the service manual is your friend here. anyway the reason i did it was mostly to mess around on some of the MARS/CAP frequencies for a local emcomm group i just joined, not trying to broadcast on AM or anything weird. but while i had it open i also swapped out the stock electret mic element in my HM-219 for an electret from an old Heil element i had laying around. huge difference honestly, people on 40m have been commenting that my audio sounds way better than before. i think the stock mic element in those handmics is just kinda mediocre and Icom knows most people will upgrade anyway. has anyone else done any other mods to the 7300 thats actually worth doing? ive seen some stuff about the cooling fan mod where you put a quieter fan in but im not sure if thats necessary since mine doesnt run that hot during normal use. also seen chatter about adding an external 10mhz reference input but that seems like a pretty invasive mod for what you get unless youre doing weak signal stuff.

N1MM vs Log4OM for contest logging — anybody running both?
yeah i run exactly that setup, N1MM for contests and Log4OM as the master log. after every contest i just export the ADIF from N1MM and import it into Log4OM, takes maybe five minutes and ive never had a duplicate problem that wasnt already a duplicate in real life. the only thing to watch is making sure your callsign and operator fields are set the same in both programs otherwise the ADIF merge gets a little weird with some of the fields. for WSJT-X during a contest its honestly easier to just close Log4OM and point WSJT-X at N1MM directly, theres a UDP port config in WSJT-X and N1MM will accept it, they actually work pretty well together once you get the port numbers sorted. i think the default is 2237 for N1MM but double check that. the main thing is you cant have two programs both trying to grab the UDP broadcast from WSJT-X at the same time without a splitter and thats more trouble than its worth for most people

first HT — totally lost on what to get
congrats on the ticket first of all. okay so the baofeng debate has been going on forever and honestly both sides have a point. for a total beginner just learning the ropes its not terrible, but the receive on those things is really broad which means you get a lot of splatter and noise from nearby signals that a better radio would filter out. if you can stretch to 150 i'd honestly look at the yaesu ft-65 or maybe a used ft-60 if you can find one. the build quality difference is just night and day, like physically holding one you can tell its a real radio. CHIRP is just free programming software you run on your computer, you plug the radio in with a cable and you can load up all your local repeater frequencies way faster than doing it by hand. you can still manually enter freqs on most radios but if you have like 20 repeaters to put in you'll want chirp trust me. the repeaterbook website works with it directly which is pretty handy.

embarrassed myself on a net last night, could use some guidance
yeah what he said. also most nets have a net preamble they read at the start that kinda explains the format so if you can catch it at the beginning that helps a lot. i just got my general too and started checking into nets maybe two months ago, it does get way less nerve-wracking after like the third or fourth time. the tuesday group sounds like your local ARES or traffic net maybe? ours does the same thing where they do formal traffic first then open it up.

Winlink setup - RMS gateway confusion, am i doing this right?
yeah this sounds like the classic audio level thing even if you think its set right. with the SignaLink on a TS-590 specifically, the receive audio path can be tricky because the 590 has that built in USB audio but if youre using the SignaLink it should be going through that instead. one thing i had to do was actually go into the VARA HF settings and drop the TX drive way down, like further than felt right, because the ALC was technically in range but VARA was still getting clipped somewhere in the chain. also worth checking - what RMS gateways are you targeting? some of the busier ones on 40m can have a queue and if youre catching it at a bad moment the session will just stall out. try hitting one thats a little further out or on a less congested band, sometimes 30m is way cleaner for this kind of thing. the handshake timing with VARA isnt something you really need to tune manually, it handles that, but the gateway does need a clean connection to negotiate properly so any hiccup in audio and it just gives up.

confused about DXCC vs WAS vs WAZ — how do these even work together
ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and i keep seeing people talk about chasing DXCC and WAS and i sort of understand what they are individually but im confused about how people actually pursue these at the same time. like do you just log everything and sort it out later or is there some strategy to it? i got my general a few months ago and ive been slowly working DX on 20m mostly and i've confirmed maybe 40 entities so far which i know isnt a lot but its a start. someone at my club told me i should be applying for credits as i go rather than waiting until i have 100 but honestly the LoTW stuff still confuses me a little bit. i uploaded my log but i only have like 12 confirmed there so far. also the zones thing for WAZ, is that tracked separately or does LoTW handle that too? i feel like every time i read about this i get more confused not less lol
