  1. Working the recent 3Y0K Bouvet pileups got me thinking about the most effective method for tracking DX split patterns. Experienced operators may gradually move their listening frequency across the range—working stations first at 5 kilohertz up then 6-7-8-9, moving 500 Hz at a time, staying put, etc. By identifying this pattern, you can anticipate where the operator is likely to tune and be ready to call. I've been using the IC-7610's dual receive, but wondering if others have found better techniques. What's your setup for decoding DX listening patterns - dedicated second radio, waterfall analysis, or other methods?
  2. yeah so WWFF and KFF are kind of the same thing but layered - KFF is the US national program and it feeds into the global WWFF database automatically when you upload. so you really just upload once to the KFF system and it handles the rest. the wwff.world website is where you'd go to look up references and check the upload status and all that. on the QSO count thing - 44 is the magic number for a full activation credit in WWFF, which is different from POTA's 10. you can still log and upload with fewer contacts but it wont count as a full activation for the awards program. that said a lot of people still go out and operate even if conditions are rough and they only get 20 or 30 contacts, it still counts toward the hunters side for the people who worked you so theres value in it either way. one thing i wish someone had told me before my first WWFF activation - double check that the reference you're going to is actually within the boundary you think it is. some of the park boundaries in the database dont perfectly match whats on google maps and ive heard of people operating from a parking lot just outside the actual reference boundary. the wwff.world site has KMZ files you can load into google earth to verify. worth doing before you drive an hour somewhere.
  3. Had similar oscillation with my homebrew 20m rig. Try reducing the IF gain slightly with a 10k pot in series with the AGC line. Sometimes the MC1350P runs too hot with strong signals even with proper AGC.
  4. Thanks for the real-world report! I've been hearing more about JS8Call lately but haven't tried it yet. Can you share what kind of antenna setup you used for the NVIS work? Was it just a basic dipole or something more elaborate?
  5. the logging software thing trips everyone up at first. get N1MM+ set up before the contest and just run it in practice mode a few times so your fingers know where to go. when youre in the middle of a pileup is not the time to be figuring out keyboard shortcuts trust me learned that one the hard way during an ARRL SS a few years back. Field Day is a great way to build the muscle memory in a lower stress environment too. our club does it every year and we always have a few newer folks sitting in and just watching how the experienced ops handle rate. you pick up a lot just by watching.
  6. dont stress it too much. i was the same way when i started. i think the real answer is just use em whenever theres any chance of ambiguity and you'll be fine. HF is where it really matters — conditions can go sideways fast and if someone mishears your suffix it can mess up the whole exchange. on 2m locally i honestly barely use them half the time unless the repeater is being weird. just listen to how the experienced ops on your local nets handle it and kind of model that. you'll develop a feel for it pretty quick
  7. Check your PIN diode bias networks first - IRF510s can have significant gate leakage that affects bias voltages. Also verify ground connections between PA and mixer stages - poor grounding is a common culprit for desense issues.
  8. so ive been interested in ham radio for a while now, mostly because my neighbor has a big antenna setup and it looks cool, and also i kind of want to be able to communicate if there's ever some kind of emergency situation. anyway i finally decided to just go for it and get my technician license but i honestly have no idea where to start. like do i just show up somewhere and take a test? do i have to take a class first? i looked at the FCC website and it was kind of confusing. someone at work mentioned hamstudy.org but i dont know if thats like the official thing or just some random site. also how hard is the test actually, i was pretty good at science in school but that was a while ago and i dont really remember much about electronics or frequencies or any of that stuff
  9. yeah what he said about igates vs digis is a real thing people dont think about. also 5 watts can be surprisingly marginal depending on where you're driving, hills and buildings eat it up fast. i run 50w on mine and i still get gaps in spotty areas. might just be RF coverage honestly and not a config problem at all.
  10. HF is where the real fun is honestly. You can talk to people all over the world without repeaters, work different countries, try digital modes... its a totally different experience than local stuff. The test isn't too bad if you study, maybe spend a month with hamstudy.org or get the ARRL book. Once you get on 20 meters and make your first DX contact you'll understand why everyone pushed you to upgrade
  11. congrats on the first one, that's always the hardest one to actually go do. 10 contacts in 40 minutes on your first try with 10w is solid, dont let anyone tell you otherwise. on the frequency thing — most activators i know find a clear spot and just park there for the duration, especially on 40m. the hunters will find you through the spot, you dont really need to jump around. what helps more is calling CQ POTA specifically and keeping your exchange tight so you can log fast. if you start chatting with every station youll slow way down. some guys do like 3-4 exchanges and move on, keeps the pile up moving. CW will absolutely get you more contacts per hour once you're comfortable but honestly SSB is totally fine, i know activators with hundreds of activations who never touch CW. just keep at it and the numbers come naturally once you get a feel for the rhythm of running a pile up.
  12. Welcome to the hamfest world! Get there early for the best deals - vendors start setting up around 7AM. Bring cash, small bills work best, and don't be afraid to negotiate on prices. The flea market is where the real treasures are hiding!
  13. Been looking at upgrading from my trusty IC-718 to something with a waterfall display and better DSP. Narrowed it down to the IC-7300 or the FT-710 Field (which is now under $1000). Both are 100W HF rigs with built-in tuners, but I'm curious about real-world experience from folks running these as base stations. Specifically interested in receiver performance on crowded bands and any reliability issues. The 7300 has been around longer but I've heard mixed things about battery problems and overshoot with amps. The 710 Field is newer but less proven in the field. What's the consensus from actual users? Are either of these worth the step up from basic rigs like the 718?
  14. Check AE7Q and RadioQTH thoroughly before committing. The AE7Q and RadioQTH sites will show available callsigns. Sometimes what looks like it'll be available gets snatched up by relatives or former holders before the general availability date. Save yourself the application fees and heartache!
  15. okay so the waiting period thing — you actually dont have to wait anymore, they changed that a while back. used to be 60 days after initial license grant before you could apply for a vanity but that requirement got dropped. so you should be good to go ahead and submit through the ULS whenever you want. the format thing is real though. 1x2 and 2x1 calls are considered more desirable and there are way fewer of them available so yeah the odds are lower. its not exactly a lottery in the powerball sense but when multiple people apply for the same specific call during the application window they basically pick one at random from the qualified applicants. so if you're going after something like W4AB you might be competing with a dozen other people. if you pick something more obscure you might be the only applicant and it just goes through. also heads up — you can apply for calls in any district regardless of where you live, that geographic restriction went away years ago. so your southeast idea is totally doable. just search the ULS for available calls first and see whats actually out there before you get your heart set on something specific
  16. congrats on the ticket first of all. okay so here's my honest take after using HTs for about 15 years — the baofeng UV-5R is totally fine to start with. seriously. yes the menu system is kinda annoying and yes the build quality isnt amazing but it WORKS and for learning the ropes on a local repeater it does exactly what you need. i handed one to my kid when she got her tech and she used it for two years before wanting something better. the thing people dont always mention is youll want a programming cable and to use CHIRP software because programming it by hand through the keypad is a nightmare. but once its set up with your local repeaters its just a radio. if you find yourself actually using it regularly after a few months then yeah maybe look at a Yaesu FT-65 or one of the entry Kenwood HTs — they feel way nicer in the hand and the audio is better. but dont spend $150 on your first radio when you dont even know if youll stick with the hobby yet, thats just my two cents
  17. you're not overthinking it exactly but also yeah the repeater crowd is pretty relaxed about it. the short answer is part 97 doesnt mandate you use phonetics, its just strongly recommended practice especially when theres any chance of confusion or poor copy. on a local FM repeater with full quieting its usually totally fine to just say your letters — Q-R-Z whatever, everyone hears it crystal clear. where phonetics really matter is on HF, especially SSB when conditions are rough or when youre working someone far away who might not catch every letter. or in any kind of formal net. the NATO alphabet exists because when a channel is noisy, B and D and E and V all start sounding alike real fast. try it sometime on 40m when a station is barely above the noise and youll understand pretty quick why Alpha Bravo Charlie beats just spelling it straight out. on the repeater though honestly nobody cares too much, do whatever feels natural
  18. nice work getting it up, inverted-v was my first build too. one thing nobody told me when i did mine was to leave some extra wire at the ends when you first cut it, like an extra foot or two folded back, then trim to resonance. makes the whole tuning process way less stressful. sounds like youre past that point but worth knowing for next time. also 33.5 feet per side is a bit long for standard 40m anyway depending on the formula you used, the ol 468/f gives you about 33.4 feet per side at 7.0 so youre right at the edge. the inverted-v effect pulling it lower makes sense. id just trim it down a bit like the other guy said, couple inches at a time until the dip moves where you want it.
  19. 60 miles on 40m should be totally doable, that sounds like either a timing issue or your receive audio is clipping. the VARA modem is really picky about levels -- you want to see that little input meter in VARA sitting around 50% or so, not pegged. a lot of people come in too hot and the decoder just falls apart even though it sounds fine to your ears. also check if the gateway you're targeting is actually a VARA HF gateway and not a Pactor or Winmor one. they all show up in the list but you gotta match the mode or it'll just sit there doing nothing. you can filter by mode in Winlink Express session settings. that tripped me up when i first started too. if you still cant get it, try hitting one of the telnet gateways first just to confirm your message handling and account stuff is all working, then go back to RF once you know the software side is good.
  20. i was in the same boat not long ago, the part 97 document itself is like reading legal code which i guess it basically is. one thing that helped me was just downloading the actual ARRL band plan poster, theres a version you can print out. also dont stress too much about the FCC monitoring thing, they really are more focused on interference complaints and repeater drama than someone new accidentally calling CQ on the wrong part of a band. that said its still worth getting it right, just looked dumb once when i transmited outside my privileges because i misread the chart and someone on the frequency pointed it out. not fun. just take the time to look it up properly before you get on HF and you'll be fine
  21. ok so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (technician, working on my general) and i finally got up the nerve to check into a local 2m net last tuesday. the net control called for check-ins and i waited for a pause and just said my callsign. the net control came back to me and everything seemed fine but i honestly have no idea if i did it the right way or not. like do you just say your callsign once? do you say your name and location too? nobody told me beforehand and i kind of just winged it. also i saw something about a special event station on qrz this weekend, something to do with a lighthouse? and i have no idea how those work either. is it just like a regular contact or is there something special you have to do to get credit for it. theres apparently some kind of award involved but the page was kind of confusing. anyway any help appreciated, still figuring all this out
  22. so ive been running a 40m half wave dipole at about 30 feet for a couple years now and its done fine, worked plenty of dx, no real complaints. but ive been reading a lot lately about verticals and how they have a lower takeoff angle which is supposedly better for dx and i'm starting to second guess myself a bit. thing is my yard isnt huge and putting up a full size vertical with a proper radial field sounds like a whole project. ive seen guys say you need like 32 or even 64 radials for a decent ground mounted vertical and thats just not happening in my backyard without my wife having a long talk with me about the lawn. anyone actually done a real comparison between the two? like not just theoretical stuff from the antenna books but actual on-the-air results where you could tell a difference. also wondering if an elevated vertical with just a few radials is a reasonable compromise or if you really do take a big hit without the full ground system. my dipole is only at 30 feet which isnt great for 40m but it works, so im trying to figure out if the grass is actually greener here or if its just antenna envy.
  23. congrats on getting it all sorted, drilling that first NMO hole is nerve wracking for sure lol. on the squelch thing -- set it just barely above where it opens on background noise and leave it there. you dont need it cranked up. running it too high means you'll miss weak signals that are perfectly readable. just find the point where the static cuts out and back it off a tiny bit, thats basically the sweet spot. the rough audio at 15 miles could be a few things. are you moving when it happens or is it stationary too? sometimes its just multipath from being mobile, signal bounces around and you get some picket fencing which is pretty normal. if its doing it parked too then maybe worth checking your antenna connection at the mount. those NMO connectors can be finicky if they're not fully seated. also what repeater are you hitting, is it a busy well maintained one or kind of a neglected club machine? sometimes the problem is on their end.
  24. hey congrats on the General and sorry about your uncle, that's a really nice reason to want the call. so yeah the way it works now — there's a 31 day waiting period after a call becomes available before anyone can apply for it. once that window opens anyone eligible can throw in an application and if multiple people apply for the same call during that first filing window they all get considered at once and it does essentially come down to a random selection. so yes, partly luck unfortunately. the family preference thing — i believe that went away a while back when the FCC restructured the vanity rules, so i wouldnt count on that giving you a leg up. someone else can correct me if im wrong on that. as for license class, yes that matters. as a General you can apply for calls that are appropriate for your license class. a 2x3 format (like W1ABC) is fair game for General and above. the 1x2 and 2x1 format calls are restricted to Extras only. so check what format your uncle's old call was — if it's a 1x2 or 2x1 you'd need to upgrade first before you could even apply for it. good luck, i hope you get it. would be a really meaningful thing to carry on his call.
  25. so i finally did my first activation last weekend, W4V/SH-001 up in the shenandoahs. had been putting it off for like a year because i kept thinking my setup wasnt good enough but honestly just went for it and it was fine brought my kx2 with a 40m EFHW and just draped it over some branches, not pretty but it worked. got 12 contacts in about 45 minutes which i think counts as activated? the summit wasnt super remote so i had cell service and used the sotawatch spotter thing which definitely helped people find me only thing i'd do different is bring more water lol and maybe a better way to hold up the antenna, i was just kind of holding tension on it with a stick and a rubber band situation that kept slipping. also the kx2 battery ran lower than i expected, might have been the cold. anyway pretty hooked on this now
