  1. the generator vs solar question really comes down to what kind of deployments you're doing. if you're stationary for 12+ hours in a known location with decent sun the solar route makes a lot of sense, especially paired with a second lifepo4. but if you're going somewhere shaded or doing night ops or need to be ready regardless of conditions, the eu2200i is honestly hard to beat. it's quiet, fuel efficient, and can run your radio plus charge the battery at the same time. i've used one at field day for two years now and it just works. the weight is around 47 lbs so yeah it's not a backpack thing but if you're vehicle portable it's a no-brainer. on the antenna question — EFHW all day for fast deployment. the linked dipole is more efficient in my experience and gives you cleaner patterns but when youre throwing something up in 10 minutes in the dark or in bad weather the EFHW with a 9:1 unun wins on simplicity. just make sure your tuner can handle the impedance on the non-resonant bands because it gets weird.

  12. Just wrapped up a week-long camping trip where I took both my Xiegu X5105 and Elecraft KX2 for some serious side-by-side testing during POTA activations. Thought I'd share my real-world observations. Battery life: The X5105's internal battery lasted about 4 hours of mixed CW/SSB operation, while the KX2 with external 18650 pack went almost 7 hours. Both at 5W output. Receiver performance: KX2 definitely has better weak signal reception, especially in crowded band conditions. The X5105 waterfall display is nice but can be a power drain. Build quality feels solid on both, though the KX2's controls have that premium feel. For the price difference though, the X5105 offers incredible value - especially with its built-in antenna tuner working so well with my random wire.

  15. Getting ready for my first on-air contact and feeling overwhelmed by all the Q-codes I'm hearing. Q-Codes (also called Q-Signals) are three letter combinations that begin with the letter Q that CW operators use in place of common phrases. Which ones should I memorize first? I keep hearing QRL, QTH, and QRT but want to make sure I understand them before I key up. Also, when followed by a question mark, the Q-signal turns into a question. So QTH? means "what is your location?" while QTH means "my location is..." - is this correct?
  16. All modes are allowed on the new 15-kHz segment subject to the 2.8-kHz bandwidth limitation. For USB operation, just tune to the channel frequency and operate, being careful not to overmodulate and create splatter outside the channel bandwidth. ERP is calculated by multiplying your transmitter PEP by the antenna gain relative to a half-wave dipole. If your antenna has less gain than a dipole, you can run more transmitter power.
  17. I just erected a new MFJ-1982 80/40/20/15/10m trap dipole at 45 feet and I'm seeing some odd behavior on my analyzer. The SWR shows 3.2:1 on 80m at the shack end of 75 feet of RG-8X, but when I move my MFJ-259C analyzer directly to the feed point, it's reading over 8:1 at the same frequency. I understand lossy coax can mask high SWR, but this seems extreme. Has anyone experienced similar issues with trap dipoles where the feedline losses are actually making the SWR look better than it really is? The antenna works on other bands with sub-2:1 readings, so the traps appear functional.
  18. Great question! The ARRL has detailed band plans for US hams showing allocations within each band. I'd recommend downloading their frequency chart and keeping it handy. As you get comfortable with HF, you'll develop a feel for where different activities cluster - CW down low, phone in the middle, digital modes in their designated segments. The band edges become second nature after a while.

  21. I had similar latency with my 6400M - turned out to be buffer settings in SmartSDR. Try reducing the DAX buffer size to 64 samples and disable any unnecessary panadapter displays. Also check if Windows audio enhancements are enabled - they add significant delay.

You should not set your transmit frequency exactly at the edge of an amateur band to allow for calibration error in the transmitter frequency display and so that modulation sidebands do not extend beyond the band edge. On USB modes like 15m phone, you can operate down to about 21.200 MHz, but on LSB like 40m you'd use around 7.127 MHz as your practical limit. Remember - your radio shows carrier frequency, but your actual signal extends up or down from there depending on the mode.
