Pretty much exactly that - each new callsign gets assigned sequentially from the pool based on your license class and address. The FCC maintains separate lists for each region and license class. Think of it like a giant phonebook that never resets!

congrats on making that first jump! i still remember mine from like 15 years ago and yeah the nerves were real. sounds like you found a good one for your first contact too. the guys who take time to talk to new hams are the best part of this hobby that shaky hands thing happens to everyone by the way, i think its just part of it. gets easier real quick once you realize nobody is judging you out there. most of us are just happy to hear new voices on the bands

yeah flux can absolutely swing that fast, especially when you've got active regions rotating across the solar disk and then off the limb. 180 to 145 in a week isn't unusual at all during this part of the cycle. the good news is we're still riding pretty high on cycle 25 overall so even when it dips it tends to bounce back. the kp thing — actually high geomagnetic activity hits the higher bands hard too, maybe even harder in some ways depending on your path. polar paths especially get hammered. if you were working that JA via long path or near-polar short path then a kp of 5+ would explain a lot. you might have better luck on 15m during those disturbed periods since it can sometimes stay open when 10 tanks. DXMaps.com is worth bookmarking if you havent already, you can see real time spots and kind of get a feel for where the openings actually are versus just guessing from the indices.

Don't overthink it! You can do SOTA with just a Technician license and handheld transceiver - get off the couch, find a summit and make VHF contacts. I've activated peaks with just my HT and spare battery.

Switch to Quiz Mode as soon as you feel ready - spend most of your time in retrieval practice rather than just reading. You want to practice pulling information out of your head since that's what the exam requires. I passed mine last month using this approach.

As a newer CW operator, I found Mode B confusing at first but it's definitely worth learning. Take it slow, practice slow, until your wrist and fingers develop the habit and you feel the rhythm of each letter rather than counting dits and dahs. The mode becomes less important once you develop that muscle memory.

Just got my General last month and ready to dive into CW. I've been using a straight key to practice but everyone says paddles are the way to go. Problem is, I'm completely lost! Looking at everything from $50 budget paddles to $400+ Italian works of art. What should a new CW operator prioritize - feel, adjustability, or just get something affordable to start? Any specific recommendations for a first paddle that won't break the bank but also won't hold me back as I improve?

I actually use Mode A and have never felt limited by it! Some argue the advantage of iambic keying isn't really worth the bother of learning. For contest work, I find the simpler Mode A timing easier to predict under pressure. Really depends on your sending style and what feels natural.

Mode B is definitely preferred by most serious CW ops because it gives you more control over timing. The iambic mode allows you to slip a dit between two dahs or a dah between two dits, and mode B makes this much more predictable once you get the hang of the squeeze timing.

so ive been sitting on 40m most evenings this week trying to work a few stateside contacts before bed and its just dead. like unusually dead. checked the solar data and nothing crazy going on, just k index sitting around 2 which should be fine. even tried calling CQ for a good 20 minutes last thursday and got nothing. maybe everyones on FT8 now and i just dont know it lol. used to be you could always find someone ragchewing down around 7.250 or so but lately its just noise. wondering if im missing something or if others are seeing the same thing

I'm dealing with the same issue on my truck. The paint really does interfere with grounding. If you find resistance between the mount and chassis, run a grounding wire to a grounded part of the vehicle and keep it as short as possible. Made a huge difference on my setup.

I keep seeing YouTube videos showing hams with analyzers, antenna masts, large batteries, fancy backpacks, computers and more for activations. After almost 200 successful activations, I've learned you can succeed with minimal gear. What's your truly essential SOTA kit? I'm planning some longer hikes and every ounce matters. My current minimal setup: radio, battery, coax, and dipole. SOTA only needs 4 contacts for points anyway.

Consider the newer amplifiers designed with SDR radios in mind - they're more tolerant of fast rise times. The IC-7300 seems to be constantly sold because it is probably the best selling HF radio in the history of amateur radio. There are thousands of them out there. The abundance of used units means many are upgrading, not necessarily having problems.

I had the same problem! Turn off any DSP noise reduction or filtering on the radio - the TM-710G's built-in filters can sometimes interfere with 1200 baud AFSK decoding. Also try adjusting the squelch threshold.

the mode A vs mode B thing does matter but honestly for getting back up to speed it probably isnt your main problem. most people who learned on one mode get confused when they switch, so if you dont remember what you used before just pick one and stick with it. i run mode A and never looked back. for the paddle adjustment, the gap thing is huge. you want the contacts close enough that a light touch closes them but not so close that any little vibration sets them off. theres no magic number, you kind of have to feel it out. what i do is set the tension pretty light, maybe lighter than feels natural at first, and then practice really slow. like painfully slow, 8 or 10 wpm slow. sending clean characters at low speed before trying to push the rate up is the only thing that actually worked for me when i came back after a couple years away. the muscle memory comes back faster than you'd think once you stop fighting the keyer. also check that your keyer speed on the K3 matches what you think it is. sometimes those settings get bumped.

Had a similar issue on my mobile setup. Fluctuating SWR is caused by changes in conductivity of the surface under the vehicle and objects in close proximity - loose coax connections are the main cause of inconsistent SWR readings. Check your PL-259 connections first.

Don't forget that for successful EME contact on 144MHz, sky noise in direction of the Moon has to be less or equal 500°K. Use EME prediction software to avoid times when the Moon crosses the galactic plane. Your horizontal Yagi will work but consider the Faraday rotation losses - they can be significant on 2M.

The antenna upgrade is one of the best investments you can make for an HT. With a better antenna, especially installed at height, you can probably reach quite a few repeaters and enjoy a much better simplex range, even with the low powered HT. I notice a BIG difference between my HT's "rubber duck" and a roll-up J-Pole.

I use Log4OM for daily QSOs and love it, but tried it in a small contest last month and had performance issues. The interface becomes sluggish during rapid QSO entry, and the contest scoring calculations seemed slow compared to N1MM+. Stick with your hybrid approach.

I routinely hear experienced HF operators using "germany" for G, "japan" for J, and "sugar" for S. When experienced hams start following their own recommendations, it will be a lot easier to convince new hams to use ICAO phonetics. That said, stick with NATO - it's always understood.

congrats. my first contact was a complete disaster, i had the wrong offset programmed in and couldnt figure out why nobody was responding for like three days. finally someone at the club meeting told me what i did wrong. your experience sounds way smoother than mine was.

Started with MMTTY/N1MM+ last year and placed in top 10 in my section. The learning curve is steeper than FT8, but practice tuning in stations during contests before transmitting really helped. Don't forget to turn off RIT - being exactly on frequency matters much more in RTTY than other modes.

As a fellow QRP operator, I've found that FT8 on 15m can still produce contacts even when the band sounds dead on SSB. Try 21.074 MHz around local noon - you might be surprised what comes back!

Consider adding a directional coupler and power meter in your TX chain for monitoring. Remote-SDR v5.08 has excellent integration with external measurement devices via the web interface. The automatic TX/RX switching works well, but manual override capability is essential for troubleshooting.

I've got a Diamond SG7900A NMO dual-band antenna mounted on my truck roof, and I'm seeing some strange SWR readings. On 2 meters I'm getting 1.3:1 across the band, but on 70cm it jumps to 2.5:1 at 440 and over 3:1 at 450 MHz. The antenna is center-mounted with good ground plane contact. Using about 15 feet of LMR-240. Anyone seen this before?
