New Ham Radio Products at DX Engineering - March 2026 Roundup
DX Engineering's quality has always been solid in my experience. Been using their grounding and bonding products for years. Their new Shack Grounding Package looks comprehensive with coax surge protector, ground bus, RF ground plane kit, and all the copper assemblies. Good timing with storm season approaching - lightning protection is no joke!

first homebrew dipole — what am I doing wrong with the feedpoint
2.8 isnt terrible for a first build honestly, could be a bunch of things. height is definitely a factor — 20 feet is kinda low for 40m, you want at least a quarter wave up if you can manage it, and an inverted V with that low an apex is gonna have the ends pretty close to ground which affects resonance and pulls the impedance all over the place. also lamp cord wire — is it stranded? stranded wire has slightly higher velocity factor than solid and that can shift your resonant point a bit, usually means you need the legs a touch longer not shorter. i'd stop trimming for now honestly. the coax length can also matter more than people think when you dont have a choke balun at the feedpoint. RF can ride back down the outside of the coax shield and mess with your readings. try winding about 8-10 turns of the coax into a coil right at the feedpoint — cheap and easy air core choke balun. that alone might change your swr reading noticeably.

thinking about going for extra class, is the theory stuff actually that hard
the exam isnt that bad but i will say some of the questions feel pretty disconnected from anything youll actually do on the air. like i can calculate the resonant frequency of a tank circuit now i guess but ive never once needed that while operating. still glad i did it though, the privileges open up and theres kind of a satisfaction knowing you sat through all that math. just use a question pool study app and dont overthink it.

anyone else just sitting around monitoring lately
yeah all the time honestly. sometimes i dont feel like dealing with QRM or just dont wanna have a full QSO so i just tune around. 40m late at night is something else, you really start to appreciate how the band changes. i picked up a station out of ukraine a few weeks back just clear as anything, no idea why the conditions were so good that night but i wasnt complaining

POTA logging app recommendations for small battery drain?
POLO by Ham2k is completely free and works great - I prefer HAMRS but that costs money. Both are pretty light on battery but POLO seems to use slightly less power in my experience. Just keep your phone in airplane mode with GPS only when you need it.

confused about CTCSS tones on the local repeater — am i doing this wrong?
the tone thing you're describing is actually pretty common to mix up. so CTCSS works like this — the repeater itself has a tone it requires on the INPUT (the frequency you transmit on) before it'll open up and retransmit you. if you're hearing people fine that's because you're listening on the output, and the repeater doesn't need a tone to send audio out to you. but if you had the tone turned off when you keyed up and someone still heard you, one of two things happened — either that particular repeater doesn't actually require a tone to access it (some dont, the website might just be outdated), or the person who responded to you was on a different radio monitoring the input frequency directly. on the offset thing, if it's a 2 meter repeater and the listed frequency is above 147 MHz, plus offset is correct. if it's below 147 it would normally be minus. your radio might default to the wrong one depending on how you entered it. worth double checking in the baofeng menus under the offset direction setting, it's usually labeled as a + or - option somewhere in there. as for calling on the repeater — totally normal to just say your callsign and say you're monitoring or listening. some people say "[callsign] for any takers" or just throw their call out after a gap in conversation. no wrong way really as long as you ID properly. don't overthink it, just get on and talk.

how does the vanity callsign thing actually work? confused about the process
i went through this last year, got my vanity call on the second try actually. first time someone with an extra license applied for the same call during the window and they got it over me since im only general. was a little frustrating but thats just how it works i guess. second call i picked had less competition and it went through no problem, took maybe a week or two after the window closed to show up in ULS. definitely use AE7Q like the other guy said, it shows you how many people have applied for a given call so you can kind of gauge your chances before committing

anyone else notice the bands have been weird lately
so ive been on 40m most evenings this past week and something just feels off, like propagation is doing something strange. some nights i can barely hit a repeater two counties over and then last thursday i was chatting with a guy in finland like he was next door. dont even have a particularly good antenna setup right now since i had to take down my dipole after a storm knocked part of it loose. anyway just curious if others are noticing the same thing or if its just me and my garbage feed line situation lol

what do all these Q codes mean when people are talking on the radio
yeah you pretty much just pick it up over time but theres definitely a learning curve. QRM is interference from other stations, like man-made noise, while QRN is natural static and stuff like lightning. QSB means your signal is fading in and out which is super common on HF. QRZ is asking who's calling, youll hear that one constantly. QRP means low power operation, some guys get really into running like 5 watts and making contacts across the world with it. 73 just means best regards, its the standard sign-off everybody uses. 88 means love and kisses, traditionally sent to a woman operator but honestly its kind of old fashioned now and some people find it a bit much depending on context so i wouldnt go throwing that one around until you get a feel for the culture. OM means old man which sounds weird but its just how hams say fellow operator, not literally old, and YL is young lady which they use for any female operator regardless of age. its just tradition going back decades, most people dont think twice about it but its worth knowing the context

Struggling to break through 10 WPM barrier - Koch method?
I've been practicing CW for about 6 months now and am pretty solid at 5 WPM, but I just hit a wall at 10 WPM. Every time I try to go faster, I start counting dits and dahs instead of hearing the characters. I've heard about the Koch method but haven't tried it yet. Should I ditch my current approach and start over with Koch? Really want to get to 20 WPM for contesting but feeling frustrated right now. Any advice would be appreciated!

dipole vs vertical for 40m — which is actually worth building first
dipole first, no question. you already have the space for a half wave on 40 which is about 66 feet, so your 75 foot run works fine even with a little sag in the middle. dont overthink the orientation when youre starting out, yeah it matters eventually but a dipole up in the air on 40m is going to work way better than anything you spend three weekends building on the ground. verticals can be great but the radial thing is real, people underestimate how much work a proper ground mounted vertical is. ive seen guys put up a vertical with 4 radials and wonder why it sounds deaf and noisy compared to their neighbors dipole thats only 25 feet up. the math on radials is kind of brutal, you really want 16 minimum to start seeing decent efficiency and that adds up fast. clay soil does help a bit but its not magic. get the dipole up, work some stations, then you can figure out if you actually want dx badly enough to go dig up your yard for a vertical later.

checking into nets for the first time - little confused about how it all works
so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (tech class, studying for general) and i keep hearing people talk about nets and checking in but honestly i still dont fully understand how it actually works in practice. like i get the basic idea, theres a net control station and people call in, but when i actually tried to listen to the local 2m net last tuesday i wasnt sure when to jump in or what to say exactly. i heard the net control guy say something like "QNI" and then a pause and i wasnt sure if that was my window or not. i ended up just listening the whole time. also do you have to pre-register for nets or can you just show up and check in? and are special event stations the same kind of thing or totally different? theres apparently a special event coming up for a state parks thing and i want to participate but i dont want to embarrass myself

yeah same thing happened to me when i was new, felt kinda silly saying "Whiskey" for my W call but honestly you get used to it fast. i'd say just practice it even when you dont really need to, like on a clear local contact just so it feels normal when you actually do need it in a pinch

studying for general, not sure what to focus on for HF stuff
the FCC database usually updates within a day or two now, sometimes faster. used to take a week or more but they changed something a while back. once your new class shows up in the ULS you can operate, you dont have to wait for the paper license to arrive. as for the test itself, the parts that got me were the power limits on certain bands and the specific frequency edges — like knowing where the phone portions start and end on 40 and 80 meters. those are worth drilling because they word the questions in ways that feel similar but have different answers. the electrical theory stuff like the reactance and impedance questions are also worth actually understanding rather than just memorizing because a few of them are worded differently than you'd expect and if you know the concept you can work it out even if you blanked on the exact answer. honestly after you pass just get on the air as fast as you can, even if you just listen for a while. the band plans make way more sense once youve actually heard whats happening where.

I've been an Extra for about 15 years and wanted to share some observations about on-air etiquette that might help folks, especially those moving from Technician to General and getting on HF for the first time. Not listening long enough: One of the most fundamental principles in ham radio is listening before transmitting - jumping onto a frequency without monitoring can disrupt ongoing conversations or interfere with emergency communications.Calling CQ on occupied frequencies: Often a frequency is in use but you can't hear the other station. There's nothing more infuriating than being in a QSO and having it ruined by someone calling CQ on top of you.Improper power levels: Start with low power and only increase if needed to make contact - this is called QRP operation and is a hallmark of good radio practice.These are easy fixes that make the bands more enjoyable for everyone!
