so ive had my general for about two years now and honestly been pretty happy with the privileges but lately ive been eyeing some of the extra class bands especially down at the bottom of 20m and 40m where all the serious DX seems to hang out. been looking at the question pool and some of the stuff in there is no joke, like the smith charts and the filter theory and all the impedance matching stuff. i passed my general without too much trouble but this feels like a different animal. did anyone else find the jump from general to extra really steep or is it more manageable than it looks on paper? i dont have an engineering background, mostly self taught from handbooks and youtube.

honestly the theory looks scarier than it is once you actually sit down with it. i had the same feeling going in, zero engineering background, just a guy who likes messing with antennas. the smith chart stuff specifically tripped me up at first but there are a few videos out there that explain it in a way that actually makes sense and once it clicks it clicks. the filter questions are mostly pattern recognition after a while. i used the hamstudy site pretty heavily and just kept grinding the pool until i was hitting 90 percent or better consistently. took me about three months of studying maybe an hour a night. the extra class bands are absolutely worth it, that lower chunk of 20 has a completely different feel, way less qrm on a lot of weekends.

the exam isnt that bad but i will say some of the questions feel pretty disconnected from anything youll actually do on the air. like i can calculate the resonant frequency of a tank circuit now i guess but ive never once needed that while operating. still glad i did it though, the privileges open up and theres kind of a satisfaction knowing you sat through all that math. just use a question pool study app and dont overthink it.
