confused about what i can and cant transmit on HF as a tech
ok so i passed my technician exam about 3 months ago and ive been mostly on 2m and 70cm doing local stuff but i keep hearing people say techs have some HF privileges and i honestly dont really understand what that means or where to find the actual rule about it. like i looked at part 97 for a bit but its kind of a wall of text and i wasnt sure if i was reading the right section. i think i found something about 10 meters but then someone at my club said i can also do some stuff on 15 and 40 but only like cw or something? im not even sure i have that right. anyway my radio does cover HF and i just dont want to accidentally be somewhere im not supposed to be. is there like a plain english version of what techs are actually allowed to do on HF

Keep transmissions brief and use appropriate SSIDs to identify your station type. In my metro area, I run WIDE1-1 during commute hours and switch to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 only for longer trips outside the urban core. Smart beaconing helps too.

Also verify your offset is correct - 146.940 should have a -600 kHz offset, so your transmit frequency is 146.340. On the 2-meter band, the common offset is 600 kHz. Get both the tone and offset right and you'll be golden.

anyone else just happy to be back on the air after a long break
yeah man totally know that feeling. i came back after about a year off and the first contact i made i totally blanked on my own callsign for a second, just sat there like an idiot. 40m has been pretty decent here in the evenings lately too, got a nice long chat with a guy in tennessee last thursday that went on for like 45 minutes, we just talked about antennas the whole time which is kind of funny but thats half the hobby right there anyway

what do all these abbreviations even mean when people are talking on HF
yeah you basically got QSL and QTH right. QSL is acknowledgment/confirmation, QTH is your location. QRM is interference from other stations and QRZ is basically asking who's calling, you'll hear that a lot when someone's running a pileup. 73 is just the traditional sign-off meaning best regards, goes way back to the telegraph days, nothing mysterious about it. OM means old man which sounds rude but its just how hams refer to other male operators, and YL is young lady which is used for any female operator regardless of age. theres a ton more — QRN is static/atmospheric noise, QSB is signal fading, QRP means low power operation. honestly the Q codes came from international telegraphy so that operators speaking different languages could communicate, thats why they all start with Q. ARRL has a full list on their website somewhere, worth bookmarking. you'll absorb most of the common ones pretty fast just from listening

finally trying to wrap my head around EME — what does a realistic starter setup even look like
the NF thing is not intuitive at all, i spent like two weeks confused about the same thing when i started poking around EME. basically think of it this way — the signal coming back from the moon is so far down in the noise that every tenth of a dB you can shave off your system noise figure is actually meaningful. i run a Lunar-Link preamp right at the feedpoint with like a 0.15dB NF and even that small improvement over my previous setup made a noticeable difference in what WSJT-X was decoding. your 500w and dual yagi setup honestly sounds like a reasonable starting point. i made my first EME contact with similar power and a single 17el yagi, it took a while and i had to sked with patient operators but it happened. just get on the ON4KST logger and let people know your grid and your setup and youll find someone willing to work you.

finally pulled the trigger on an IC-7300 — some thoughts after a few weeks
so ive had this thing for about three weeks now coming from an old TS-480SAT that i ran for like six years and honestly the difference is kind of hard to describe. the waterfall alone is worth it for me, i spent the first few days just watching it instead of actually working any stations which my wife thought was hilarious. the real filter adjustments are where i notice it most on CW, being able to notch stuff in real time without fumbling through menus is just night and day from what i was used to. i did have some weirdness early on where the ALC was acting strange on digital modes but i think that was my fault messing with the output settings trying to get it dialed in for FT8. one thing i wasnt expecting — the thing runs warm. like noticeably warm on the bottom. not hot, just warm. anyone else notice this or is mine doing something weird? i've got it on a wooden shelf with probably 3 inches of clearance on the sides and maybe 2 on top. wondering if i should be doing something different there. overall though really happy with it. probably should have made the jump sooner but the 480 treated me well so it was hard to let go.

first ARES activation - didn't really know what to expect honestly
that actually sounds really similar to my first one lol. i had built it up in my head based on all the training materials and honestly the ARRL handbook stuff about emergency ops makes it sound very dramatic. real life was a lot more like... organized waiting with occasional radio traffic. which is fine, totally fine, but i definitely had to recalibrate my expectations. the welfare message traffic is underrated too, people dont realize how important that stuff is when phones are jammed up.
