so ive been on HF for about two years now, mostly digital but been trying to get into SSB more lately and honestly my audio just sounds bad compared to what i hear from other stations. not terrible but kind of muffled and thin, like theres no presence to it. im running an IC-7300 into a Heil PR-40 which should be a decent combo right? but when i get reports people always say im readable but kind of low. i've messed with the mic gain and the compression a little but every time i turn up the compression it just sounds distorted or processed.

i know the 7300 has a bunch of EQ stuff in the menu but i havent really dug into that yet. is that where im supposed to fix this or is it something with how i have the mic positioned or the gain staging or what. any tips appreciated, been frustrating me for a while now

the 7300 EQ is actually pretty useful once you dig into it. what i'd do first though is forget the compressor for now and just get the mic gain set right — you want that ALC meter barely moving into the ALC zone, like just kissing it on peaks. a lot of guys crank the mic gain way up thinking louder is better and then the compressor makes it worse. get the gain staging right first then revisit compression.

also the PR-40 is a dynamic and has a pretty flat response which is great but on SSB you generally want to boost a bit in the 2k-3k range where voice intelligibility lives. the 7300 has a TX tone control in the menu, i think its under set > tone — play with rolling off below like 300hz and bumping the midrange a little. makes a big difference on how you cut through on a crowded band. and yeah, mic positioning matters too, you want to be talking across the mic not directly into it with a dynamic like that

honestly same boat as you a while back. what helped me was just asking a local ham to do a side by side with me on a simplex frequency so I could actually hear what I sounded like in real time while adjusting stuff. way more useful than asking for reports from random dx stations who just say "59" to everyone anyway lol. the 7300 has a monitor function too so you can hear yourself through the headphones which is kinda weird at first but helps you hear what you're transmitting
