first SOTA activation went way better than expected, few questions though

so i finally did my first activation last weekend, went up W6/NS-XXX (one of the easier ones near me, not gonna say which cause i dont want it getting crowded lol) and honestly it went smoother than i thought it would. got my 4 QSOs in about 20 minutes on 20m SSB with the old ft-817 and a linked dipole i threw together from some instructions i found online.

anyway my questions are kind of scattered so bear with me. first off the summit reference thing — how strict are they about the activation zone? i was like maybe 30 feet below the actual high point because there was this rocky outcrop that i really didnt want to scramble across with the radio gear. the sotamaps thing showed i was still in the zone but i wanted to double check that the zone is calculated from topo data and not like someone physically going out and measuring it.

also do most people self-spot on the reflector or do they pre-announce on the SOTAwatch alerts? i kind of just winged it and called CQ for a while before someone finally came back to me. felt like i was shouting into the void for the first bit. and one more thing — is there a good way to work chasers on 2m FM if youre not sure what repeaters are around? i brought my HT but barely used it.

congrats on the first one, that feeling when you get that 4th contact is pretty great. to answer your zone question yeah its purely based on topo, the activation zone is defined as within 25 meters vertical of the true summit so as long as sotamaps or the sota database is showing you inside the contour you're fine. nobody is coming out to check and the database pulls from proper elevation data. ive had people get weirdly paranoid about this and hike right to the cairn in terrible weather when they honestly didn't need to.

for alerting, pre-announcing on sotawatch is really the way to go if you want a decent pileup. post an alert the night before or morning of with your expected time and bands and the chasers will have it on their screens. self-spotting via the reflector or the SOTA spotter app works once youre already on the air, a lot of people do both. on 2m FM just try simplex first, 146.52 is the national calling frequency in the US and you'd be surprised how many chasers monitor it specifically for SOTA. repeaters are hit or miss depending on the summit but simplex often works better than people expect from elevation.

oh man i just did my third activation like two weeks ago so im right there with you on the learning curve. the spotting thing confused me too at first. i downloaded the SOTA goat app and it makes self-spotting way easier when youre up there with cold fingers trying to type. definitely worth it
