so ive been messing around with RemoteHams for a few months now and honestly its been mostly fine for basic stuff but lately ive been trying to set up a more permanent remote station situation and running into some weird behavior with the SDR side of things. my main rig is an IC-7300 at a cabin about 90 miles out and i've got a Pi running the server software plus a software defined radio dongle for the panadapter feed. the control side works okay but there's this lag between when i tune and when the SDR display actually updates and its not consistent — like sometimes its half a second sometimes its closer to 2-3 seconds and i cant figure out if thats a bandwidth thing at the cabin or something in the RemoteHams client itself.

the cabin has a decent enough connection, fiber was finally run out there last spring, so im not sure its the upstream bandwidth being choked. i adjusted the SDR sample rate down to like 1.2 MHz which helped a little but the inconsistency is still there. anyone dealt with this or know if theres some buffer setting im missing in the server config? also tangentially — has anyone tried running internet linking through the same connection simultaneously, i have a node on IRLP that i was thinking about moving out there and wondering if that would just make things worse

the latency inconsistency you're describing sounds more like jitter than raw bandwidth to me. fiber to a cabin is great on paper but the route from the cabin back to whatever the ISP's backbone is can still have variable latency depending on how they provisioned it and what equipment is sitting between you and the first hop. i'd run a continuous ping test for like 20 minutes and look at the variance, not just the average. if you're seeing ping times jumping around a lot thats your culprit and no amount of tweaking the SDR buffer is gonna fully fix it.

as for the IRLP node on the same connection — ive done something similar with Allstar and a remote HF setup and it was mostly fine as long as you're not expecting to run both hard at the same time. the voip traffic for linking is actually pretty light, way less than the SDR stream. the bigger thing is making sure your QoS rules on the router prioritize the audio correctly or you'll get choppy audio on the linking side when the SDR kicks in heavy.

yeah what he said about jitter is right. also just to throw this out there — i ditched RemoteHams awhile back and switched to a combination of RCForb for the radio control and just used a separate websdr instance for the panadapter and honestly the SDR side got a lot smoother. not saying RemoteHams is bad, it just felt like the SDR integration was kind of bolted on and not as tight as i wanted. the IC-7300 over RemoteHams always felt a little sluggish to me even on good connections. might be worth trying a different client stack if you have the time to mess with it.
