First-time go-kit builder - what am I missing?

Just got my General license and want to build my first emergency go-kit for local ARES deployment. I know the transceiver is the heart of any go-kit, and I'm looking at multi-band options but honestly feeling overwhelmed by all the choices. Current plan is a couple Baofeng UV-5Rs for the budget, plus a small 12V power supply and some basic antenna wire. What critical items am I forgetting that would leave me stranded during an actual emergency activation?

Don't forget the boring stuff that kills deployments - spare fuses, extra coax connectors, and basic tools! Your whole station can be kicked offline by one bad connector or blown fuse. Also consider pre-programming your radios with emergency frequencies and local repeaters to save precious setup time.

Start simple but think about power redundancy. LiFePO4 batteries offer long life and stable performance with sufficient capacity for extended operations. A small solar panel for recharging during long deployments is worth the investment too.

The UV-5R is a great starter radio! They're perfectly adequate for the task and inexpensive enough for beginners. I'd suggest getting the programming cable and learning CHIRP software now while you have time. Also pack a paper copy of local repeater info - the purpose of emergency kit is to help when you can't access the cell network.
