first time doing a net check-in, what do i even say?

ok so i finally got my technician license about 3 weeks ago and ive been listening to the local 2m net on tuesday nights for a couple weeks now just to get a feel for it. the net control guy seems really friendly and i think im ready to actually check in but im honestly not sure what im supposed to say when he calls for check-ins. like do i just say my callsign and wait? do i say my name too? i dont want to step on anyone or do it wrong and embarass myself in front of everyone. theres probably like 15-20 people on this net every week so its a bit nerve wracking. any advice would be great

honestly the hardest part is just keying up that first time, after that its totally fine. most nets just want your callsign phonetically and then just unkey and wait. some nets you also give your name and location but a lot of them the net control will ask for that after you check in. just listen to how other people are doing it for a few minutes before your turn and copy what they do, you'll get the hang of it really fast. net control folks are used to new people checking in, they wont care if you fumble it a little. the main thing is dont hold the key down too long when you give your call, just say it once clearly and let go.

also if the net has a specific format sometimes theyll announce it at the top of the net, so pay attention to the preamble when it starts. some of the more formal traffic nets want things in a specific order but a casual 2m ragchew net is usually pretty relaxed about it.

i was so nervous my first check in too lol. i actually fumbled my callsign phonetics and had to repeat myself but the net control just said copy and moved on like nothing happened. these guys really dont care, theyre just happy to have new people joining. just go for it
