So ive been reading about WWFF for a few weeks now and it looks really fun, theres a state park about 20 minutes from my house that has a KFF reference and im thinking of doing my first activation next weekend. But honestly the more i read the more confused I get about the actual mechanics of it.

Like i understand you need 44 QSOs to get a full activation counted, and you have to be physically inside the boundary of the park or nature reference area, but beyond that im kind of fuzzy. Do i need to upload my log anywhere specific? Is WWFF separate from POTA or do they share the same log system? I know some parks are in both programs which makes it extra confusing.

Also just practically speaking - im running an ic-705 and a random wire up in a tree, that should be fine right? Never done any kind of portable operation before so im a bit nervous about the whole thing. Any tips from people whove done activations before would be really helpful, even just like what to expect on the air.

Welcome to the addiction, seriously once you do your first one youll want to do them every weekend. So WWFF and POTA are actually separate programs with separate databases, but a lot of parks overlap meaning the same physical location has both a KFF reference number and a K- POTA reference. You can operate at one and log for both programs simultaneously which is great, just make sure you upload to both sites separately - wwff.us for the WWFF side and pota.app for POTA.

For the log upload, WWFF uses ADIF just like everything else, and you submit through the WWFF website. The 44 QSO requirement is correct for a full activation, though i think you can still submit a partial activation for fewer contacts and it still counts toward the hunters chasing your reference. Spotting yourself on the WWFF or POTA spotting networks makes a huge difference, you go from calling CQ into the void to having a pileup in about 30 seconds. Use SOTAwatch or the POTA spots app.

Your 705 and a random wire is totally fine, i do most of my activations with similar setup. Get there early, give yourself time to set up before you start operating, and dont stress if the first 15 minutes feel slow. 40m is usually the workhorse band for parks during the day.

yeah what he said about spotting yourself is the big thing nobody tells you about. i did my first activation without spotting and sat there for like 45 minutes making maybe 8 contacts and got really discouraged. second time i put myself on the spots right away and hit 44 in under an hour. night and day difference.

also bring more battery than you think you need, and snacks lol
