so ive been keeping an eye on spaceweather.com and the solar flux index has been creeping up the past few days, sitting around 180-something yesterday which honestly i havent seen in a while. fired up the rig this morning just on a whim and 10 meters was absolutely alive. i mean like, worked a station in Japan without even trying, just called CQ and he came back to me first call. running like 100 watts and a simple dipole up about 25 feet.

been licensed since 2019 and i dont think ive ever experienced a genuine long path opening like that. kept the radio on all morning and caught a few EU stations too, one guy in Italy who had a massive signal, honestly louder than most stateside contacts i make on 40.

anyway i guess my question is — is there somewhere better than spaceweather to track this stuff in real time? and does anyone know if this is likely to keep up or was this just a fluke. i know we're supposed to be heading into higher solar max territory but i never really understood how quickly conditions can change day to day.

oh man 10m has been so good lately, youre not imagining it. SFI in the 170s-180s is legitimately excellent for the high bands. for tracking i use the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center site, they have a 45-day solar flux plot that gives you a decent sense of the trend. also DXMaps.com is great for seeing real-time spots and you can actually watch openings happen as people log contacts — its kind of addicting honestly.

the thing about solar flux is it doesnt directly cause the ionization, its more of an indicator of overall solar activity. the F2 layer is what youre riding on those long paths and it can shift pretty quickly, like conditions in the morning can be completely different by afternoon depending on where the sun is relative to the path. your Japan contact was probably a long path since youre in North America — that would route over the South Pole basically, peak time is usually right around your sunrise give or take.

dont chase it too hard, just keep the radio on and let it happen. some of the best DX i ever worked was because i happened to have the rig on and wasnt even really trying.

yeah that tracks, last tuesday i heard some 10m signals that sounded like they were next door and they turned out to be Australia. i'm relatively new to HF and this solar cycle stuff is still kind of confusing to me but it's cool to see it actually working in real life instead of just reading about it. congrats on the Japan contact that's awesome
