ok so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i still feel weird about when to use phonetics. like i know NATO phonetics, Alpha Bravo Charlie etc, but sometimes on the air people just say letters normally especially on 2m repeaters around here and i dont want to sound like im overdoing it or being annoying. but then on HF everyone seems to use them all the time even mid sentence sometimes.

is there like an unwritten rule about this or do you just feel it out? i was doing a contact last week and said my callsign without phonetics and the other guy asked me to repeat it three times so maybe that answers my own question lol. but still curious what more experienced people do, like do you always phonetic your full call every time or just when conditions are rough

pretty much just feel it out honestly. on a local repeater where everyone knows everyone, yeah people just rattle off their calls without phonetics because the audio is clear and youve heard KD9XYZ a hundred times already. but on HF, especially DX or when bands are noisy, phonetics every single time without question. the whole point is to make sure the other station copies your call correctly, and a busted callsign in the log doesnt help anybody.

the rule of thumb i was taught early on was if theres any doubt at all, use phonetics. and if somone asks you to repeat, definitely switch to phonetics if you werent using them. you figured it out the right way actually, that three-repeat situation is exactly why they exist. dont worry about sounding over the top, nobody ever complained that a callsign was too clear.

yeah what he said but also i'll add that during contest operating you sometimes drop phonetics on fast exchanges just to save time, like if signal reports are 59 across the board you're not spelling out every single thing. but your callsign you still phonetic, always. i've had my call logged wrong so many times when conditions got sketchy and i tried to shortcut it, not worth it
