so ive been licensed for about 14 months now (general class) and ive been mostly just doing random QSOs and a little bit of SOTA stuff with my HT when i go hiking. but honestly ive been watching people talk about CQ WW and ARRL Field Day and i feel like im missing out on something. like field day looked absolutely chaotic in a fun way from the videos i saw.

my question is i guess — for someone who has never done a contest before, whats a reasonable first one to try? i dont have a huge station, just a modest wire dipole up about 30 feet and a used IC-7300 i picked up last spring. i can work SSB fine and ive been slowly learning CW but im not fast enough to do anything serious with it yet. CQ WW looks massive and intimidating, the exchange seems simple enough but theres so many stations all at once. and ARRL sweepstakes keeps coming up in conversations but the exchange for that one looks really complicated honestly.

also is there anything good coming up before end of year that i would be recomend for a first timer? i dont even care about winning obviously just want to get the experience and make a bunch of contacts without embarrassing myself too much lol

Field Day is honestly the perfect starting point and i wish i had done it earlier in my ham career. the pressure is way lower than a real contest because you're usually operating with a club, so if you freeze up or forget the exchange someone right next to you can help. the exchange itself is dead simple too — just your class and section, thats it. you'll make that exchange probably 200 times in a weekend and by hour two it just comes out automatically.

for something solo and coming up soon, CQ WW SSB is in October and honestly dont let the size of it scare you. yes its enormous but that actually works in your favor as a newcomer because there are SO many stations calling CQ that you can just search and pounce all weekend without ever having to run a frequency. just tune around, hear a loud station, give your callsign, log it, move on. the exchange is just signal report and CQ zone which you can look up once and write on a sticky note. with an IC-7300 and a dipole you will absolutely get in the log.

sweepstakes i would save for year two tbh. the exchange has like five pieces of info and when its fast-paced SSB it can be a lot to process until you know what youre doing.

yeah what he said about field day is right, i did my first one with a local club and it was just a good time. even if you mess up the exchange nobody cares, the other station will just ask you to repeat and move on. people forget that most contest operators have heard every possible mistake already.

the SOTA angle you mentioned is interesting too — have you looked at SOTA activator contests? theres sometimes specific SOTA on-the-air events and that might feel more natural since you're already comfortable with that operating style. not quite the same as a traditional contest but good for building confidence making rapid QSOs. anyway dont overthink it just jump in, worst case you make 20 contacts and learn a ton for next time
