so ive been doing SOTA for about a year now and someone at my local club mentioned WWFF and i kind of went down a rabbit hole this past weekend reading about it. seems really cool honestly, you get to operate from nature parks and reserves and there are references for all kinds of protected areas not just mountain summits which is great because i live in a pretty flat area and the nearest SOTA summit is like 3 hours away.

anyway i found a KFF reference for a state wildlife management area thats literally 20 minutes from my house which is awesome. im planning my first activation for next weekend. i've done enough SOTA to know the basics of portable ops but i wanted to ask a few things specific to WWFF before i go out there.

first - do i need to pre-spot on a cluster or announce it somewhere before i go? with WWFF i keep seeing mentions of the WWFF facebook group and also wwff.us for north america but i wasnt sure if there was a standard way people announce activations ahead of time. second question is about the log submission - do i just upload an ADIF to the wwff.us site after? and does it have to be a specific format or does any standard ADIF work? last thing - minimum contacts is 44 right, same as a normal SOTA activation? wait no that doesnt sound right. i think ive confused myself. someone please set me straight on this lol

welcome to WWFF, you're gonna love it especially coming from SOTA. the big difference you'll notice pretty quick is the vibe is a bit more relaxed in terms of summit-chasing urgency, people are generally just happy to work parks and nature areas.

so to answer your questions - yes you can post a spot ahead of time, most activators use the wwff.us site for north american activations (KFF references) and there's also pota.app which a lot of people use since POTA and WWFF overlap quite a bit in the US. posting a self-spot or an alert the day before or morning of really helps get people listening for you. the WWFF facebook groups are active too but the app/website alerts are probably more effective for getting chasers tuned in.

for logs yes standard ADIF works fine, just upload after you get home. and on the minimum contacts - its 44 for a valid activation, not 10 like SOTA. that trips up a lot of people coming from SOTA. 44 unique callsigns in the log. it sounds like a lot but honestly once you're spotted you'll usually hit it within 30-45 minutes on a decent band, sometimes way faster. good luck out there, post a trip report when you get back

yeah 44 contacts is the number, i remember being surprised by that too when i first looked into it. i did my first KFF activation last spring at a local national forest and it took me maybe an hour to get there on 40m with a simple end fed. wasnt bad at all once the spots went out.

one thing i'd add is just double check that the specific area you're going to is actually within the boundary of the reference, sometimes WMAs have weird shapes and if you're parked at a trailhead near the edge you want to make sure you're actually inside the designated area. learned that the slightly awkward way when a hunter drove by and told me i was technically outside the WMA line by like 50 feet haha. moved my chair and all was fine but still.
