so ive been licensed for about two years now and ive mostly just done casual ragchews and some local nets but a buddy at my club keeps telling me i need to try CQ WW this october. i finally looked up the rules and honestly it seems a little overwhelming, like there's so much going on with zones and multipliers and i'm not even totally sure my station is set up well enough to compete with guys running kilowatts.

i'm just running a 100w IC-7300 into a dipole up about 30 feet which i know isnt exactly a contest powerhouse but i figure i can at least participate and learn the ropes right? my main question is should i go in with a goal like a certain number of QSOs or just kind of see what happens. also not sure if i should focus on one band or jump around. any advice appreciated, even basic stuff is fine i really dont know what im doing here

your setup is totally fine for a first contest run, honestly. the IC-7300 is a solid radio and a dipole will get you plenty of contacts especially on 40 and 15 meters during CQ WW. dont worry about competing with the big guns, thats not the point when youre learning. my first time i just set a goal of 100 QSOs for the weekend and ended up getting way more than that because once you get in the rhythm it kind of takes over.

the zone thing seems confusing at first but you pick it up fast, basically you're just logging the CQ zone of whoever you work and that counts as a multiplier. N1MM or Log4OM will track all that for you automatically so you dont have to think too hard about it. i'd suggest starting on 20m Saturday morning, there'll be a huge pileup of stations and you'll get QSOs fast which is encouraging. then wander around to 15 or 10 if conditions are good. have fun with it, CQ WW is one of those contests where even a modest station can have a really good time

yeah just go for it, i ran my first CQ WW with a wire antenna and an old Kenwood and still had a blast. one thing nobody told me before my first contest was to set up your logging software BEFORE the contest starts lol. i spent like 45 minutes messing with N1MM right when it kicked off and missed a bunch of easy contacts. also make sure your exchange is smooth, for CQ WW phone you just send your signal report and your zone so practice saying it fast because it gets repetitive quick. good luck
