so ive been going back and forth on this for a while now and i cant really find a straight answer anywhere. im trying to decide whether to put up a proper 40m dipole at about 30 feet or just stick with the vertical i already have. the vertical is a hustler 4BTV that i put up a couple years ago and it works ok i guess but i feel like im always running into noise and i dont know if thats the antenna or just 40m being 40m at this point in the solar cycle.

the thing is i have decent space for a dipole, maybe 70 feet of run available if i angle it a bit, but the feedline run would be kind of ugly and id have to convince my wife about another pole in the backyard. the vertical is already there so its more about whether its worth the effort. anybody gone from a 4BTV to a dipole on 40 and actually noticed a real difference or am i just chasing something that wont matter much at 100 watts

honestly the noise thing is probably your biggest clue there. verticals pick up a lot more local noise than a dipole at a decent height, thats just kind of the deal with them. i had a similar setup a few years back and when i finally got a 40m dipole up at like 35 feet the noise floor dropped noticeably and i was hearing stations i just wasnt catching before. now that said 30 feet on a 40m dipole isnt exactly ideal, youre still pretty low in terms of wavelengths, but its going to have better rejection of the local junk than the vertical will.

the 4BTV isnt a bad antenna but those radials really matter and if you dont have a solid ground system under it the efficiency tanks pretty fast. i wouldnt give up on it entirely, some guys do really well with verticals on 40 for dx because of the lower angle radiation but for general use and less noise the dipole is probably going to feel like an improvement. just my experience anyway.

30 feet is kind of low for a 40m dipole to be honest but its still probably going to beat a vertical with a questionable ground system. do you know how many radials you have down? that makes a huge difference with the 4BTV, like night and day difference. i put 16 down under mine and it woke up a lot.
