so i've been watching the solar flux index creep up over the past couple weeks and this morning it jumped to around 180 which i havent seen in a while. fired up the radio around 0900 local and 17m was absolutely alive, worked a JA station with no trouble at all which never happens from my QTH in the midwest. then caught a ZL on 15m which honestly surprised me because 15 has been pretty dead for most of the year.

anyone else noticing this or is it just my setup behaving today. im running a dipole at about 30 feet so its not like i have some fancy antenna farm. just wondering if the better conditions are widespread or if i got lucky with a gray line opening or something. also curious if people think this holds through the weekend because i was planning to actually sit down and try to work some real DX saturday morning.

yeah 17 and 15 have both been punching above their weight this week. i noticed it tuesday evening, had a long rag chew with a CT3 station and the signal was genuinely 59 both ways which i wasnt expecting at all. the SFI being up helps but i think we also had a stretch of low geomagnetic activity, the K index was sitting at 1 or 2 for a few days in a row and that combination is kind of the sweet spot if you're trying to work long path stuff.

for saturday your best bet is probably getting on before sunrise your time, that gray line window into the pacific can be real short from the midwest, maybe 20-30 minutes depending on time of year. 15 might be your best shot for JA and then check 12m later in the morning if the flux stays up. worth keeping an eye on the DXMaps cluster too just to see whats actually being heard where.

this is actually really helpful to read because im still pretty new and i keep hearing people talk about solar flux and K index but i never totally understood why it matters for like, talking to someone across the world. is there a good resource to learn more about how all this stuff connects? i tried reading some of the ARRL handbook section on propagation but it kind of lost me halfway through with all the math.
