so ive been studying for the technician exam for about three weeks now and honestly im not sure if im going about it the right way. i bought one of those study guides, the gordon west one i think, and ive been reading through it but some of it just doesnt stick. like the electrical stuff and ohms law i get fine but then theres all this stuff about band plans and frequencies and i keep mixing up which frequencies you can use on which bands as a tech.

i also found the hamstudy.org site which has the actual question pool and ive been doing practice tests on there. im passing most of them but i get tripped up on the same handful of questions every time. is there anything specific people remember being on the exam that i should really drill down on? or should i just keep hammering the practice tests until i consistently score high? test is in about two weeks.

hamstudy.org is honestly all you need at this point if youre already passing. just keep doing timed practice exams and when you miss something, read the explanation and move on. the actual exam pulls from that exact question pool so nothing should surprise you.

for the frequency stuff, honestly dont try to memorize it logically, just memorize the answers. some of it doesnt really make intuitive sense until youve been on the air for a while anyway. the T1 section has a lot of rules questions that people mess up because they overthink it. just trust the answer that sounds most "official" and youll be fine most of the time. two weeks is plenty of time, you got this.

yeah the gordon west book is good but i remember thinking it had a lot of extra stuff that wasnt really on the test when i took mine last year. the practice questions are what really matters. i think i did like 10 or 15 full practice tests in the last few days before mine and just made sure i wasnt getting below like 85% consistently before i went in.

the electrical formulas like ohms law and the power formula do show up but theres only a few variations of those questions so once you can do P=IE and rearrange it youre fine. the part that tripped me up was some of the antenna stuff and what the different license privileges actually are. like knowing that as a tech you get full HF privileges on 10 meters is one of those things i kept forgetting. anyway just keep at the practice tests and youll be alright, the real exam felt easier than the practice ones to me honestly.
