so ive been on HF for maybe 8 months now and i keep getting reports that my audio sounds muffled or like im talking through a sock. running an IC-7300 with the stock hand mic and i know thats probably part of the problem but ive heard guys running the same setup sound totally fine so im not sure where to start.

ive messed around with the TX bandwidth and the treble/bass settings in the menu but honestly i dont really understand what im doing, just kind of turning knobs and hoping for the better. compression is set to like 4 out of 8 which i picked randomly. i also noticed my ALC is bouncing around a lot when i talk, not sure if thats normal or if im overdriving something.

anybody have a baseline setup for SSB voice that actually works? or tips on mic technique because maybe im just doing it wrong from the start

ALC bouncing hard is usually the first sign youre either too close to the mic or the mic gain is cranked too high. on the 7300 i'd start by pulling the mic gain back to around 50-55% and then talk at a normal conversational level with your mouth maybe 2-3 inches from the mic, slightly off to the side so you're not blasting plosives straight into it. the ALC should barely be moving on average speech, just occasional peaks on loud syllables.

for the TX bandwidth i run mine at 2400hz which gives decent clarity without going so wide you're splashing adjacent freqs. the treble boost in the menu can help cut through noise on the other end but dont overdo it or you'll just sound harsh. compression at 4 is pretty reasonable actually, i wouldnt go higher than 5-6 or you start getting that processed telephone sound that people hate. biggest thing honestly is just ask a local buddy to give you honest signal reports while you make adjustments, the meters dont tell the whole story

the stock hand mic that comes with most radios is kind of mediocre, not terrible but not great either. i swapped mine out for an Heil PR-781 and the difference was pretty noticeable, more presence and the elements just seem to match better with how icom rigs are voiced. that said i know guys who got great audio out of the stock mic just by fixing their mic gain and technique so probably start there before spending money.

one thing i dont see mentioned a lot is the TX monitor — turn it on so you can hear yourself on the air while transmitting. its a little weird at first but you can actually hear exactly what you sound like which makes it way easier to dial things in without needing someone else on the other end. found a processing artifact in my own signal that way that i never would have caught otherwise
