so this has been bugging me for a couple weeks now. my APRS beacon is going out fine, i can see it hitting the digis and getting iGated no problem, shows up on aprs.fi and all that. but the position it's showing is like 3 miles off from where i actually am. i checked the lat/lon i entered in the TM-D710 and it matches what my GPS says, so im not sure where the discrepancy is coming from.

background: im running the TM-D710G which has the built in GPS, 1200 baud on 144.390, using the internal TNC. path is WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1. i thought maybe the GPS just needed more time to lock but ive left it on for hours and it still shows the wrong spot on the map. the weird part is that older packets from like a month ago show up in the right spot, so something changed at some point and i cant figure out what.

anyone run into this? wondering if maybe aprs.fi is caching something old or if theres something funky with how the radio is outputting the position data. i havent changed any settings that i know of.

check if your radio somehow switched from GPS mode to manual coordinate mode, that catches people off guard sometimes. on the D710G there's a setting buried in the GPS menu where it can fall back to a manually entered position if the GPS signal drops, and if someone (or a firmware quirk) toggled that without you noticing, it would transmit the old hardcoded coords. worth pulling up the GPS status screen while its running and confirming it shows an actual satellite fix and not just showing dashes.

also just a thought — aprs.fi does cache stuff but it shouldnt be showing wrong data if fresh packets are coming in correctly. you can click on your callsign and look at the raw packet log to see exactly what lat/lon string is being transmitted. that'll tell you real quick if the problem is in the radio or somewhere downstream.

had something similar happen to me last year, turned out the GPS antenna connection on the back had worked itself a little loose and it was getting just enough signal to think it had a lock but the position was garbage. not saying thats your issue but worth checking the physical connection if yours has an external antenna port. the internal patch antenna on those radios isnt always great depending on where you have the head unit mounted.
